Infrastructure project delivery: a life cycle evaluation model for public private partnerships. Governments continue to embrace public-private partnerships so as to obtain value for money and provide financial accountability to taxpayers. This project will determine the most appropriate way to engage the private sector in infrastructure delivery and develop a dynamic life cycle evaluation model to ensure projects are delivered effectively and efficiently.

Summary
Optimisation of transit priority in a transportation network. This project is aimed at developing an optimised approach to combine various types of public transport priority in an urban network which can be used by transport planners to increase the efficiency of traffic movements and reduce traffic congestion. The case study is the network of Brisbane including all arterial and local roads.
Containment and Reduction of Rework in Transport Mega Projects. Mega transport projects (>$1 billion) are poorly managed during their construction with significant cost and schedule overruns and benefit shortfalls regularly being experienced. Having to perform rework has been identified as a major factor that contributes to these unintended consequences. As there has been limited research that has empirically examined rework causation, an inability to develop effective rework containment and reduction strategies prevails. This research aims to develop a theoretical model that can be used to develop robust containment and reduction strategies to mitigate the adverse economic, productivity and safety consequences that materialize from performing rework during the construction of mega transport projects.Read moreRead less

Water reuse is emerging as a key strategy for the conservation of drinking water supplies around Australia. Accordingly, there is a need for fast, reliable, affordable and highly sensitive means of ensuring the reliability of treatment processes and final water quality. This research aims to meet such needs by providing new tools based on fluorescence analysis. These tools are to be implemented for online monitoring of treatment performance and for the identification of accidental contamination of drinking waters by recycled water. The enhanced ability to ensure both recycled water quality and drinking water quality will have public health and environmental benefits as well as protecting public confidence in water recycling systems.Read moreRead less
A novel integrated motorway management system for less congested, more reliable and safer motorways. Motorway traffic congestion poses major economic, social and safety problems, which this project seeks to address through intelligent traffic management solutions as an alternative to massive infrastructure expansion. The project’s innovative traffic analysis and control system will reduce periods of congestion and increase driver safety.
Development of an international knowledgebase on urban transport policy instruments. This project will produce an on-line knowledgebase on urban transport policy instruments providing an understanding of the performance of such instruments from international experience. It will allow assessment of given instruments in different contexts, and identify opportunities for integration of policy instruments. It will assist decision-makers and interest groups to understand the role and potential of dif ....Development of an international knowledgebase on urban transport policy instruments. This project will produce an on-line knowledgebase on urban transport policy instruments providing an understanding of the performance of such instruments from international experience. It will allow assessment of given instruments in different contexts, and identify opportunities for integration of policy instruments. It will assist decision-makers and interest groups to understand the role and potential of different measures and provide a key source for transport researchers and educators. It will significantly assist achievement of urban transport policy objectives of reduced congestion; enhanced environment; greater safety; improved public health; better access; fairer opportunities; improved quality of life and increased sustainability.Read moreRead less
The role of vegetation and associated root suction and reinforcement on the stabilisation of transport corridors and sloping ground. The project will promote the concept of green corridors and green hills for stabilising unstable soils through optimum root reinforcement and suction. The improved load capacity, control of unacceptable soil movement and slope stabilisation will provide an efficient platform for sustainable development of transport and building infrastructure.
Innovative urban traffic congestion solutions: optimising road space using networks of multi-class priority lanes. This project strengthens national approaches to a pervasive Australian problem; growing traffic congestion deteriorating liveability, environmental health and economic performance of the cities. This project improves approaches for traffic priority design to improve the efficiency of several class of vehicles and therefore, reducing traffic congestion.

It is important to treat pathogens in stormwater and wastewater before release into downstream recreational waters or harvesting. Using plants in water treatment improves the removal of pollutants of concern to human and ecosystem health. However, the exact mechanisms which generate this improvement remain unknown, and this is especially true for faecal pathogen removal. This project will enhance our understanding of the interactive role that roots, their exudates, plant debris and soil microbes play in faecal pathogen removal in urban water treatment systems. Through this understanding, this project will lead to optimised low-energy, low-tech and low-maintenance treatment systems.Read moreRead less

Water is a critical resource in Australia and as pressures on water resources increase, water recycling has emerged as an important component of water management practises throughout Australia. Decentralised wastewater treatment systems (or package plants) offer opportunities for water recycling in regional communities; however this application is limited by our understanding on the removal of contaminants of concern through these treatment systems. This project will assess the suitability and efficiency of decentralised membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for the removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and pathogens in accordance with the 2006 National Guidelines for Water Recycling.Read moreRead less
