Summary
The Politics of International Criminal Justice after the Arab Uprisings. This project interrogates how international criminal law can reshape state-society relations in periods of transition after conflict or repressive rule. Since late 2011, socio-political and legal change has swept across the Middle East and North Africa, requiring us to understand the role that various forms of national and international law can play in redressing past wrongs. Since late 2011, socio-political and legal change has swept across the Middle East and North Africa, requiring us to understand the role that various forms of national and international law can play in redressing past wrongs. Through interviews with lawyers, judges and members of civil society in Libya, Palestine and Syria, this research will provide a rich account of the nature of the emerging Arab state and how it is shaped by international law and notions of individual criminal responsibility.Read moreRead less
'Trading' Women's Rights in Transitions: Designing Diplomatic Interventions in Afghanistan and Myanmar. This project aims to examine the link between diplomatic negotiations and their impact on the shifting status of women during times of deep political change. It will assess three key areas of international diplomatic negotiations around peace agreements, aid, and security sector reform and assess how these negotiations affected women's status on the ground. Leveraging power and influence on the United Nations Security Council. This project examines the fundamental problem of how elected members on the Security Council can influence Council decision-making and norm development. Assembling a research team of international lawyers and political scientists, the project seeks to provide a rigorous, multi-disciplinary evaluation of why and when non-permanent Council members have succeeded in having impact on the Council's decision-making process. The Sustainable Use of Australia's Biodiversity: Transfer of Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property. Australia has a diverse and unique resource in its native and natural biology. Its indigenous peoples have learned to harness this resource and have accumulated knowledge of its usefulness to humans in the treatment of illnesses and ailments. This project will redress the dearth of analysis integrating legal and social-scientific perspectives on recent anti-terrorism laws. Combining perspectives from international and criminal law, criminology and social psychology, the project will explore the challenges these developments pose to acce ....Terrorism and the non-State actor after September 11: The role of law in the search for security. This project will redress the dearth of analysis integrating legal and social-scientific perspectives on recent anti-terrorism laws. Combining perspectives from international and criminal law, criminology and social psychology, the project will explore the challenges these developments pose to accepted legal categories; debates around exceptionalism as a justification for new laws; their unintended and collateral consequences; and public attitudes to new security measures. The research will enhance understanding of current reactions to terrorism and inform policy analysis and public debate over appropriate future responses.

National and Regional Patent Administration in Small to Medium-Sized States in the Global Economy. Patents and patent administration are key to the rules of the game in the knowledge economy. The study will analyse how a group of smaller national patent offices including Australia?s, are responding to the agenda of patent harmonization that is being led by the US, European and Japanese patent offices. What is the impact of this agenda on Australia's interests? Should Australia take the lead in ....National and Regional Patent Administration in Small to Medium-Sized States in the Global Economy. Patents and patent administration are key to the rules of the game in the knowledge economy. The study will analyse how a group of smaller national patent offices including Australia?s, are responding to the agenda of patent harmonization that is being led by the US, European and Japanese patent offices. What is the impact of this agenda on Australia's interests? Should Australia take the lead in pushing for a regional patent organization? Using sociolegal techniques, the study will answer these and other key questions facing Australian policy makers.
