IMPACTS OF TRANSIT LED DEVELOPMENT IN A NEW RAIL CORRIDOR. Impacts of transit-oriented development (TOD) in precincts adjoining the new Perth-Mandurah railway will be addressed by longitudinal survey. Results of a revealed preference questionnaire about actual trips will be combined with a stated choice questionnaire. Impacts of transit-oriented development (TOD) in precincts adjoining the new Perth-Mandurah railway will be addressed by longitudinal survey. Results of a revealed preference questionnaire about actual trips will be combined with a stated choice questionnaire. Aims are to quantify the effects of TOD on rail and car use and on daily activities, new railway services on the travel behaviour of households near new station precincts, differing accessibility of station precincts on household travel patterns, improved accessibility on economic activity and employment. Replacement of car-trips by walking and cycling, changes in shopping & leisure activities & the effect of trip-chaining on number of trips are of particular interest.Read moreRead less

The project researches the issues for allowing Australian Road Traffic Authorities to automatically capture road traffic data, forecast traffic flows and smartly route traffic flows to avoid congestion on road networks. This will lead to several benefits, such as (a) reducing traffic congestion, shorten travel time and lower pollution, (b) better utilization of existing road infrastructure by diffusing traffic to alternate routes, (c) provide economic benefit by allowing one to delay infrastructure expansion, (d) monitoring of aberrant behaviour by road users to ensure a safer road environment, and (e) improved flexibility in deployment of the Wireless Sensor Network to meet the needs of the road authorities and community.Read moreRead less
Domain-driven information, quality assurance and interoperability for road transport systems. This project addresses the ever increasing need for improved information quality in the area of road transport and urban planning. Public bodies, like State and Federal authorities, require highly accurate sets of personal records as they are central authorities for the identification of individuals. This project will develop techniques for the enhancement of these records.
CATCH: Children, Active Travel, Connectedness and Health. This project will explore built and social environmental influences on children's independent mobility, active travel and health. The research will provide necessary evidentiary support to justify government and development industry policy supportive of healthy and child-friendly environments.
Invesitgation of environmental staining and storage discolouration in Faba Bean. Faba beans are an important pulse crop in Australia. They are exported to the Middle East and Europe for human consumption where buff coloured beans are desired. A third of beans become discoloured in storage. These are downgraded to stock feed with a loss of $50 per ton to the grower. Currently little is known about the causes. Environmental factors and selected genotypes will be assessed to determine the potential ....Invesitgation of environmental staining and storage discolouration in Faba Bean. Environmental factors and selected genotypes will be assessed to determine the potential causes of discoluration. Analytical techniques will ascertain the discolouration process and the compounds produced. The aim is to provide growers with information on management strategies and breeders of strain resistant genotypes.Read moreRead less
Life in the Shipping Lane; The Cost of Increasing Disturbance to Whales. This project aims to quantify the increasing risk of ship strike to humpback whales in Moreton Bay, and predict the impact of chronic disturbance to nursing calves. The research builds on pilot findings identifying Moreton Bay as a resting area for migrating humpback whales. This project aims to quantify the increasing risk of ship strike to humpback whales in Moreton Bay, and predict the impact of chronic disturbance to nursing calves. The research builds on pilot findings identifying Moreton Bay as a resting area for migrating humpback whales. Using empirical and modelling approaches, this research responds directly to the Federal Government strategy for mitigating ship strike, which explicitly flags Moreton Bay as an 'area of concern'. The project has been developed in collaboration with traditional owners and industry, and is expected deliver optimal mitigation measures for the region. Findings further carry implications for similar functional habitats along Australia's humpback whale migratory corridors.Read moreRead less
