An evaluation of novel aluminosilicate materials based on modified kaolins for environmental applications. We have shown that simple and inexpensive modification of kaolin produces materials that adsorb large amounts of ammonium (N) and phosphate (P). We intend to evaluate and develop these materials for water treatment, so as to reduce N, P inputs into rivers and wetlands. The materials can then be used as fertilisers. We intend to evaluate and develop these materials for water treatment, so as to reduce N, P inputs into rivers and wetlands. The materials can then be used as fertilisers. Similarly addition of the materials to sandy soils to reduce leaching losses of N, P from fertilisers will be investigated. The major outcome of this research will be effective and inexpensive procedures for reducing eutrophication due to N, P from waste water and fertilisers.Read moreRead less

Directed evolution of enzymes for bioremediation: structure function studies of bimetalloenzymes. We will evolve enzymes that degrade organophosphate pesticides (OPs) that are used in Australian agriculture. Although these OPs were designed to kill insects they are closely related to chemical warfare agents and are known to be toxic to humans. Bacteria have acquired a number of enzymes that degrade some OPs. One such enzyme has been used in field trials demonstrating its potential to degrade OP residues. However, many pesticides are not removed rapidly and OP-degrading enzymes require modification(s) if they are to be useful environmental reagents - this can be achieved with directed evolution. Accurate and timely production estimates are essential to Australia’s grain producers and industry to better deal with down side risk caused by climate extremes and market volatilities. However, current systems for predicting crop production are inaccurate and unreliable. This project aims to develop a next generation system for advance and high accuracy predictions for yield, crop type and area at field scale. This will be done by integrating the state of the art global climate models (GCM), biophysical crop modelling, and high-resolution earth observation technologies. This project will deliver a next generation crop prediction system to predict crop production at field scale for improved decision-making and enhancing resilience.Read moreRead less

Both medical and plant sciences face similar technological problems in harnessing the power of modern DNA sequencing for accelerating the pace of beneficial gene function discovery. Plant and animal researchers will collaborate in this program to meet this common challenge. The research outcomes envisaged in this proposal will benefit human health by enabling more rapid discovery of genes related to obesity, immunity, fertility, neurological function and cancer. In the plant sphere, the outcomes will shed new light on plant functions related to plant energy metabolism, vitamin biosynthesis drought tolerance and water use by crops. The research will benefit both human health and agricultural food production and quality.Read moreRead less

New and efficient methods for the assembly of biologically active compounds will emerge from this research and thus provide materials for evaluation as potential therapeutics in the treatment of a range of pathological conditions including Alzheimer's disease and certain types of lung cancers that respond poorly to currently available treatments. The underpinning methodologies are also likely to provide opportunities in other areas, including materials science. The training of a highly capable post-doctoral in chemical synthesis, an area where there is now an extraordinary and unsatisfied demand for such expertise, will be a further benefit of the proposed program of research.Read moreRead less
