Robust Control of Electrostatic Microactuators. This proposal seeks to address a number of fundamental problems associated with electrostatic microactuators that form an integral part of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Performance of these microactuators is limited due to the presence of a specific form of nonlinearity in their dynamics. In this research advanced and innovative feedback controllers will be developed to improve operational performance of such microactuators. The global MEMS market is projected to increase from $10B in 2005 to $40B in 2015. This project will enhance Australia's standing in this important high-tech field.

Control systems theory provides principles and methods for design of complex engineering systems that automatically maintain desired performance despite changes in their environment (e.g. autopilot in an aircraft). This field is facing many new exciting challenges at the dawn of new millenium, such as design of complex engineering systems in possibly networked, asynchronous and distributed environments. The network will play a major role in addressing these challenges by providing a national research focus, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of people and ideas. By delivering a National Graduate School, the network will enhance learning conditions for graduate students. Moreover, it will provide an important catalyst between Australian universities and industry. This initiative will be essential in assessing the present state of control research in Australia and drafting a detailed plan for the network's leading research role in the future. Summary
New integer programming based theory, formulations and decomposition techniques with applications to integrated problems. Optimisation problems permeate science and industry. By developing new techniques to solve larger and harder problems than is currently possible, more complex questions can be answered, and more accurate solutions obtained. Industries can use such tools to make better financial, resource management, operational, and/or strategic planning decisions.
Real-time scheduling of trains to control peak electricity demand. This project aims to develop new scheduling and control methods that will enable railways to reduce their demand for electricity during peak demand periods, without undue disruption to the timetable.

Port Waratah Coal Services operates the world's largest coal export terminal, servicing about 14 coal mining companies in the Hunter Valley, NSW. It is responsible for around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. The coal supply chain is a complex operation, hampered by bottlenecks in critical shared infrastructure. Such limitations are estimated to cost Australia about $2 billion pa in lost sales. This project will support the design of new infrastructure and processes to ensure an efficient supply chain. The new science resulting will benefit other coal operations in Australia, and potentially other bulk goods supply chains.Read moreRead less

Current risk assessment paradigms are not suited to the control of catastrophic events such as terrorism. An advanced approach to risk assessment will be developed in this project for rare high impact events such as bomb blasts, where critical infrastructure is threatened. A new software platform based on scripted agent modelling will be constructed that will allow for state of the art models to be used as agents providing a dynamic risk evaluation and necessary information for actions to infrastructure owners and emergency responders as a threat develops. Both the developed scripted agent and the risk assessment technologies can be applied to other technologies and complex risks, such as waste disposal and biotechnology.Read moreRead less
