Anandamide activated chloride channels in sensory neurons. We are seeking to understand how the nerve cells that sense our environment are regulated by signalling molecules produced by our body. Understanding how these cells function in normal conditions is essential as basis for understanding how they may function abnormally in physically stressful situations or in chronic pain conditions. Visual processing of objects defined by coherent motion. Although the human brain can easily decode the complex visual scene, little is known about how the responsible neural circuits operate. For example, how is it that a camouflaged animal, such as a moth on the bark of a tree, becomes visible once it moves? To better understand the processes, this project aims to determine how different visual areas of the brain interact with each other to create a network that is responsible for detecting ....Visual processing of objects defined by coherent motion. Knowing this will enable us to better understand the organisation and limitations of the brain.Read moreRead less
Resurgent Sodium Currents in Peripheral Nerve Axons and Sensory Neurones. This project seeks evidence that unusual gating of sodium channels contributes to the hyperexcitability that results in spontaneous impulse activity in sensory axons. It asks whether axons normally behave as if they have this gating mode, whether it can be induced, whether any such behaviour is more prominent with sensory axons than motor, and whether the current can be measured directly in sensory neurones. The project is ....Resurgent Sodium Currents in Peripheral Nerve Axons and Sensory Neurones. The project is the first to involve correlation of patch-clamp recordings with the behaviour of intact axons. Its outcomes will affect thought about sodium channel behaviour and may alter approaches to disorders of axonal excitability.Read moreRead less
The role of omega-3 fatty acids in brain mechanisms that regulate water and salt balance. The ability of mammals to survive is heavily dependent upon their ability to maintain body fluid balance. The ability of mammals to survive is heavily dependent upon their ability to maintain body fluid balance. This project aims to elucidate brain mechanisms for the behavioural regulation of water and salt balance, with specific investigation of the role of dietary fatty acids within these processes. It is hypothesised that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) affect intake of water and salt by affecting the sensitivity of various receptors, or the hormones used by this body system. Omega-3 PUFA are known to play a role in regulating genes, and therefore, may also affect the production of key proteins, such as receptors, hormones or enzymes involved in the regulation of salt and water intake.Read moreRead less
Neurotrophic factors for pelvic autonomic neurons: the role of neurturin. This project is about pelvic parasympathetic neurons, which are responsible for involuntary activities such as bladder voiding and penile erection. We are interested in the neurotrophic factors that determine survival of these neurons during early mammalian development and keep them healthy in adults. Little is known about ?parasympathetic neurotrophic factors? in general. However we have recently discovered that the prote ....Neurotrophic factors for pelvic autonomic neurons: the role of neurturin. We are interested in the neurotrophic factors that determine survival of these neurons during early mammalian development and keep them healthy in adults. Little is known about ?parasympathetic neurotrophic factors? in general. However we have recently discovered that the protein neurturin is very important in the pelvic parasympathetic system. We will determine exactly how neurturin affects pelvic neurons and how it interacts with other neurotrophic factors. Our results will fill a major gap in our knowledge of fundamental neurobiology.Read moreRead less
Understanding how the brain uses sensory information to guide reaching and grasping movements. Reaching, grasping and manipulating objects are crucial aspects of our daily lives, which are performed so effortlessly that they tend to be taken for granted. We know however that these functions take a relatively long time to mature (think of a baby learning how to get an object), and that they can be impaired by brain lesions involving a region called the posterior parietal cortex. We also know that this region has multiple subdivisions, but how exactly these interact in allowing the sensory information to guide arm and hand muscles is unknown. Discovering how this happens in terms of cellular interaction can have profound implications for the creation of new technologies such as artificial limbs and autonomous robots, and result in health benefits.Read moreRead less

Colour vision and photoreceptors in reef fish: a model system to discover the function of double cones. Humans are visual animals and as lucky Australians we love to look at The Great Barrier Reef. This project, while rooted in the complexities of visual neurobiology, uses a recently discovered set of 4 different reef fish from the GBR to teach us more about fundamental principles in vision. These fish, diverse as damselfish and snappers, will help solve a mystery centuries old. Double cones are ....Colour vision and photoreceptors in reef fish: a model system to discover the function of double cones. These fish, diverse as damselfish and snappers, will help solve a mystery centuries old. Double cones are the commonest daytime photoreceptor in the eyes of almost all vertebrates (humans without them are exceptions) and yet nobody knows what they do. Reef fish have them, so let's ask them what they see!Read moreRead less

Groups of nerve cells begin to communicate with each other through long interconnecting processes called axons. This project seeks to understand the role of specific genes in this process. This is the first time that the mechanisms controlling the growth of the earliest axons in the vertebrate brain will be examined in a living brain. Our analysis is expected to discover genes that are targets for manipulation of axon growth.Read moreRead less

Our research will identify the basal cellular mechanisms underlying drug abuse and addiction, which are likely to be the best targets for therapies to prevent and cure addiction. Our findings are also relevant to other neuropsychiatric disorders related to drug abuse (e.g. depression, anxiety) that are on the increase in Australia. Our work will enhance Australia's reputation for neuroscience research, and will provide training for students in neuropharmacology and molecular neurobiology.Read moreRead less
