Relaxin: molecular mechanisms of action in the reversal of fibrosis. Defects in relaxin and relaxin receptors are increasingly implicated as a cause of fibrosis which is associated with many disease processes. This study will examine the molecular mechanisms linking relaxin and fibrosis and will determine whether relaxin can be used to reverse the condition.
Relaxin action in the heart, kidney, lung and uterus: understanding fibrosis. Relaxin is a peptide hormone associated with pregnancy. We have recently generated a relaxin gene knockout mouse and exciting preliminary data show that without relaxin, non-pregnant mice develop signs of fibrosis in the heart, lung and uterus. Combining our expertise in molecular biology, pharmacology and physiology, the overall objective of this project is to investigate the functions and mechanisms of relaxin action ....Relaxin action in the heart, kidney, lung and uterus: understanding fibrosis. Combining our expertise in molecular biology, pharmacology and physiology, the overall objective of this project is to investigate the functions and mechanisms of relaxin action in these organs. Our findings will provide important basic information on relaxin physiology and enable us to implement a long-term partnership with Connetics to understand how relaxin regulates collagen production and/or the development of fibrosis.Read moreRead less
Novel anti-ageing peptides in the vascular system. The project will substantially improve basic understanding of the ageing process in blood vessels and provide scientific evidence to understand what preventative health care measures might work and why. It will also produce highly skilled and practically trained graduates, ready to contribute to the health industry.
Investigation of the function of Sel S a novel selenoprotein. The long term aim of this project is to find a way to prevent or delay the onset of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. ChemGenex pharmaceuticals, our commercial partners have discovered and patented a selenoprotein with antioxidant properties and have shown in vitro that it protects insulin-producing beta cells from oxidative damage. This project aims to prove, in an in vivo setting, that this protein can prevent or delay the onset of d ....Investigation of the function of Sel S a novel selenoprotein. Relationships between insulin resistance, diet and obesity in ponies and horses. There are an estimated 1.2 million horses in Australia, and the horse industry is estimated to contribute over $6.3 billion to the economy. Laminitis is a significant health and welfare problem in Australia, as it is worldwide, causing pain and lameness, loss of use, and sometimes necessitating euthanasia. Laminitis is one of the most common reasons for horse owners to seek veterinary attention, and diet and obesity increasingly predispose to this condition. Since treatment of laminitis is difficult, prevention is crucial. The outcomes from this project will include the provision of more specific advice on dietary and exercise management to vets and horse owners to reduce the incidence and impact of laminitis on the horse industry.Read moreRead less
Immediate and delayed changes to survival, physiology, reproduction and movement of chondrichthyans following capture stress. Many sharks and rays are negatively affected by the impact of fisheries capture, with unknown consequences. The project will measure changes to survival, physiology, reproduction and behaviour following capture to better understand and manage the impact of fisheries on these animals. This information is vital for their effective conservation.
Use of a cell based assay to identify novel insulin-sensitising agents. Diabetes and obesity are currently escalating to epidemic proportions in Australia and there is an urgent need to develop new therapeutics. A major feature of these disorders is impaired insulin action. We have recently developed and validated an exciting new assay for insulin action in fat cells. In this project we propose an exciting research program encompassing major research and biotechnology groups in Australia to utilise this technology to identify novel insulin-sensitising agents. These agents will be used for drug discovery purposes by our industry partner ChemGenex and as novel tools to dissect the mechanism of insulin action.Read moreRead less
Optimising bubble continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for preterm infants. Synchrotron imaging will be used to see how the lungs of newborns are aerated and move when they are supported by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) breathing support. This project will provide fundamental biological information that will contribute to refinement of devices to support breathing in babies.
Bio-inspired camouflage to prevent shark attacks on surfers. Bio-inspired camouflage to prevent shark attacks on surfers. This project aims to develop a new shark deterrent technology to protect surfers and paddlers. Shark attacks are physically and emotionally devastating for the victims, and make the community disproportionately afraid. Surfers are at most risk of attack, but current surfboard-mounted deterrents are ineffective and not widely used. This project will build on the recent discove ....Bio-inspired camouflage to prevent shark attacks on surfers. This project will build on the recent discovery that white sharks do not attack counter-illuminated (light emitting) seal-shaped decoys, and use new information about shark vision to understand why this ‘camouflage’ is so successful. This will also help to protect threatened shark species by reducing reliance on culling programs to keep people safe in the water.Read moreRead less
Dietary sugarcane-derived polyphenols reduce obesity. The Australian Sugar Industry is a billion dollar industry with refined sugar being calorie-rich but nutrition poor. The Australian Sugar Industry is a billion dollar industry with refined sugar being calorie-rich but nutrition poor. Consumption of refined sugar is a main contributor to the increasing problem of obesity and metabolic syndrome, costing the Australian health system billions of dollars annually. The principal outcomes of this project will be to show that the polyphenols contained in the waste products from sugar refining can be used to reduce body fat and insulin resistance. These outcomes have enormous implications for human health and disease, and for the sugar industry, thus providing a competitive edge in the world sugar market.Read moreRead less
