Scholars have studied trust from a host of disciplinary perspectives. With such a diversity of scholarship, we find both a conflict over approaches and methods as well as the inevitable differences about the fundamental nature of the concept of trust. Bhattacharya, Devinney & Pillutla develop a remarkably robust operational model of trust that is a function of two factors, the uncertainty faced by the parties to a relationship and the conjectures they form about each other's actions. We propose to test this formulation rigorously, using experimental methods, thereby allowing us to broaden our understanding of the critical concept of trust.Read moreRead less

Older couples remember more together than apart, but little is known about mechanisms underlying such collaborative benefits. Collaborative remembering may have therapeutic value in age-related cognitive decline and dementia, providing cost-effective, readily-available memory support. However there are several 'active ingredients' that may underlie collaborative benefits and not all of these will be equally effective or translatable into therapy. This project aims to identify and evaluate these active ingredients, teasing apart 'what', 'who' and 'how'. Testing younger and older couples, healthy and in early stages of decline, this project aims to generate new knowledge and provide a basis for future therapies utilising collaborative remembering.Read moreRead less
How many types of reasoning are there and how do they develop? This project will identify the fundamental components of human reasoning and examine how they change during the primary and junior high school years. It lays the foundation for the development of better methods for teaching children and adults how to reason.
Understanding Promises: Legal and Everyday Implications. This research will lead to a better understanding of the effects of keeping and breaking promises in different contexts. It will examine their potential beneficial function in peer relationships and their propensity to increase the quality of children's testimony. Keeping promises may be appropriate for fostering friendships but may have serious consequences when the information that is kept secret involves child abuse, for example. It will examine their potential beneficial function in peer relationships and their propensity to increase the quality of children's testimony. Keeping promises may be appropriate for fostering friendships but may have serious consequences when the information that is kept secret involves child abuse, for example. Information from this research is expected to contribute to more positive peer relationships and to children's honest disclosures of adult's (e.g. child abuse) and peer's (e.g. bullying) transgressive conduct.Read moreRead less
Exploring processes of change in parenting interventions for high-risk parents. This study will identify the timing and triggers of change in parents as they participate over 18 months in an intensive therapeutic parenting program. The findings will inform planners and service providers about the most effective features of such programs to facilitate change in parents at risk of abuse and neglect of their children.
The Development of Young Children's Mathematical Abilities: A Longitudinal Analysis. Many people have problems learning maths. Although maths is often seen as an esoteric subject of limited interest, poor maths skills are as great a handicap in education and employment as poor literacy, with similar costs for the individual and society. One cause of poor maths skills is developmental dyscalculia, a disability in which children's understanding of number is affected by underlying cognitive deficit ....The Development of Young Children's Mathematical Abilities: A Longitudinal Analysis. Many people have problems learning maths. Although maths is often seen as an esoteric subject of limited interest, poor maths skills are as great a handicap in education and employment as poor literacy, with similar costs for the individual and society. One cause of poor maths skills is developmental dyscalculia, a disability in which children's understanding of number is affected by underlying cognitive deficits. As yet there is no reliable way of identifying children with dyscalculia or other maths problems. Our research examines children's developing maths competencies as they enter and progress through primary school. Our aim is to develop diagnoses of different maths disabilities, so effective interventions can be implemented.Read moreRead less
Pathways from Child Protection and Juvenile Justice. Almost 50% of children (10-14 year) in the Juvenile Justice (JJ) system have substantiated histories in Child Protection (CP). The vast majority of children with CP histories do not go on to offend. Other children, with no CP history, exhibit troubled behaviour and offending. The accuracy of instruments designed to identify at-risk children and adolescents will be investigated and individual and social factors that contribute to maladjustment ....Pathways from Child Protection and Juvenile Justice. Other children, with no CP history, exhibit troubled behaviour and offending. The accuracy of instruments designed to identify at-risk children and adolescents will be investigated and individual and social factors that contribute to maladjustment and offending in these populations will be identified. The identification of factors that are related to children and adolescents entering the CP and JJ systems will inform the development of targeted prevention/intervention strategies.Read moreRead less
Yours and mine: development of the concept of ownership in typical children and those on the autism spectrum. From an early age we know what belongs to us and what does not - we intend to find out how our behaviours keep pace with this evolving knowledge. More important for society, we will find out if behaviours and concepts are qualitatively different in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), causing problems with social interactions.
The influence of resistance training upon movement control in the elderly. The primary aim of this applied research project is to investigate the impact of resistance training in the elderly. We will assess the responses to training that occur in the elderly, and determine the time course and persistence of adaptation. This project will be a major step forward in providing an evidence-base for interventions with divorced parents in Australia. Family Transitions Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is a theoretically based intervention that addresses the Australian Government's emphasised need of providing families with strategies to resolve relationship disputes and reduce the emotional costs to families experiencing divorce. Once evaluated for effectiveness, the collaboration of this project with Relationships Australia will enable the program to be readily accessible to the divorced parents in Australia.Read moreRead less
