The influence of sway-roll coupling on the dynamics of an inverted sailing yacht in waves. The ability of a sailing yacht to re-right in waves after capsize will influence the safety of those on board in extreme conditions.
The aim of this project is to incorporate the effects of sway-roll coupling into a numerical simulation of the behaviour of an inverted yacht in waves to assess design features which influence re-righting. The aim of this project is to incorporate the effects of sway-roll coupling into a numerical simulation of the behaviour of an inverted yacht in waves to assess design features which influence re-righting. Experimental work being conducted during 2001 will be extended to enable the forces on a model of an inverted yacht in a breaking wave to be determined. and incorporated along with theoretical predictions into the simulation.Read moreRead less
Between the Outback and the Sea: The Place of Cosmopolitanism in Contemporary Australia. 'Place' is an increasingly contested and problematic notion. In contemporary Australia, it arises as a central issue in relations between the indigenous and the 'settled'; between the refugee and the citizen; between the regional and the international. By focusing on the idea of the 'cosmopolitan' as it arises in the Australian context, and particularly with respect to the built environment (often neglected ....Between the Outback and the Sea: The Place of Cosmopolitanism in Contemporary Australia. 'Place' is an increasingly contested and problematic notion. In contemporary Australia, it arises as a central issue in relations between the indigenous and the 'settled'; between the refugee and the citizen; between the regional and the international. By focusing on the idea of the 'cosmopolitan' as it arises in the Australian context, and particularly with respect to the built environment (often neglected in favour of the concepts of 'land' or 'wilderness'), the project will enable a reconfiguration of the significance and meaning of place for ideas of citizenship and identity.

Climate variability and change is likely to be felt most acutely at the local scale in Australia. This is where inter/national and State policies are translated into practices to prepare for, and adapt to, anticipated impacts of heatwaves, bushfires and floods. This project will investigate tensions and potentialities between risk-based assessments by local governance agencies and innovations by local groups and Non-Government Organisations. The research will utilise an innovative mixed-methods approach to investigate and to analyse the strategies and experiments of adaptation practices. It aims to develop new ways of identifying and implementing practical, local, adaptive responses that are contextually relevant, socially innovative and capacity building.Read moreRead less
