Summary
Radiation therapy is a highly effective cancer treatment with extremely high doses delivered using very complex treatment machines. Unfortunately errors have occurred resulting in cases of patient death and mistreatment. We have developed a novel method to assess the treatment delivery in real-time to prevent errors. The method uses imaging devices that are already present on the treatment machine meaning that this method could have a major impact on patient safety in modern radiation therapy.

Summary
We propose a new approach to treating prostate cancer with radiotherapy to move from the standard whole prostate treatment to a personalised treatment that varies radiation intensity throughout the prostate. We will mathematically combine features that influence radiotherapy effect from advanced imaging, clinical and biopsy information. This model will map out the radiotherapy dose required at each part of the prostate, to maximise killing of the cancer whilst minimising harm to normal tissue
Non-invasive Detection Of Hypoglycaemia In People With Diabetes Using Brain Wave Activity

Summary
Hypoglycaemia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in people with both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes who require insulin therapy. Current treatments for nocturnal hypoglycaemia are usually ineffective. Combining brain wave recording and artificial intelligence, we will identify the changes that precipitate an episode of hypoglycaemia allowing the development of a non-invasive device to prevent or alleviate these fearful and potentially life-threatening events.
Our overall objective is to significantly improve the efficacy and efficiency of image-guided neurosurgery for brain tumours by including realistic computation of brain deformations, based on a biomechanical model, in a system to improve intra-operative visualisation, navigation and monitoring. The system will create an augmented reality visualisation of the intra-operative configuration of the patient’s brain merged with high resolution pre-operative imaging data.

Summary
To develop vaccines and to combat autoimmunity, we need to understand how initial immune activation influences the fate of immune cells and their progeny. To achieve this, we have developed microscopic techniques and analytical software with which to observe how initial signalling processes in the parent immune cell influence the death, proliferation and differentiation of its daughters, granddaughters and further progeny. We will use these approaches to determine how immune cell fate is control
Dendritic cells (DCs) are the body’s sentinels, with three specialized subtypes. They monitor for infections and cancer and then activate immune T cells to clear it. Interestingly, they can all arise from a single cell, but the precise steps are unknown. By literally filming this process and analyzing the movie, we hope to draw the ‘family trees’ that lead to their generation. This knowledge will offer crucial clues as to how to boost or reduce their numbers for medical applications.

Recent research indicates that noise-exposed individuals with similar hearing thresholds to non-noise exposed counterparts are more likely to have diminished temporal and spectral auditory processing abilities. This research aims to determine the relationship between noise exposure levels and auditory processing difficulties; the influence of musical training in ameliorating these difficulties; and a neurological model of causation, operation and possible remediation of these difficulties.

Summary
In the brain electrical activity either excites or inhibits nerve cells. Excitation is balanced by inhibition. If these two processes become unbalanced we can become unconscious or go into seizure. These extreme conditions emphasize the importance of the balance between excitation and inhibition in the brain. While there has been much work on the role of excitation, less is known about inhibition. In this project proposal we will investigate how inhibition regulates excitation in the cortex.

Summary
When snoring and obstructed breathing occur during sleep in young children if is associated with daytime learning and behaviour problems. By school-age it can be shown that these children have lower IQ than children who do not snore. We will study whether treatment of this obstructed breathing by taking out the tonsils and adeonoids in the pre-school age group can improve IQ outcomes for children.
Cochlear Type II Neurons In Contralateral Suppression

Summary
Sound in one ear affects hearing in the other ear. This contralateral suppression is important for hearing attention and protection from noise damage. We will test the hypothesis that cochlear type II sensory neurons provide the sensory input for this process using models where neuronal development is altered, or the neurons are removed. The study addresses hearing disability in society, facilitating cochlear prosthesis development and the understanding of hearing loss.
