Recalibrating culture: production, consumption, policy. Over the last decade the number of Australians engaging in paid or unpaid cultural activity increased by over 50 per cent. This project will address this major change in cultural production and consumption through a Greater Western Sydney case-study, thus developing an innovative cultural policy tailored to Australia's dynamic new cultural economy.
Ambitious and Fair: Strategies for a sustainable visual arts sector. This project aims to strengthen the visual art industry’s economic ecosystem. In a context where artists’ incomes are low and falling, commercial galleries are financially vulnerable and public galleries face funding challenges, the project addresses barriers to the sector’s economic health and the challenge of improving artists’ incomes. Planning the 'creative' city: reconciling global strategies with local subcultures. Increasing land values in all major Australian cities are placing pressure on local creative initiatives. Displacement of small cultural producers and the consequent dispersal of local networks is damaging to the urban social and economic fabric. This research will assess the challenges to strong and thriving creative subcultures in gentrifying cities.
