Chinese international students in Australia: A study of the transformative potential of education abroad. This longitudinal study of female Chinese students in Australian universities is the first to trace in detail these students’ subjective experience of their journeys from China to Australia and their post-graduation destinations. This project will examine international regulatory strategies for explicit user-generated content and suggest ways in which academics, policy makers and globally networked content users can be brought into dialogue so as to generate better informed and more effective regulatory policies.

The project offers a new perspective on gender and colonial history by examining crossborder movements and networks of women and men in and beyond East Asia in the early to mid-twentieth century. It focuses on Korea, which had the distinctive experience of being colonised by Japan, a non-Western colonial power. Beyond the family: relationships of intimacy in contemporary Japan. In Japan the average age at first marriage is increasing, more people are remaining unmarried and overall women and men spend proportionately more of their life single. This project examines the roles that relationships outside of marriage, particularly friendships, play for Japanese women and men in light of these broad changes.
Global/Local Intersections: History, Identity and Community in a Tokyo Subculture. The human rights of minorities are gaining increased attention in Australia and the region. It is important for our understanding of the region that we are informed about the development of minority gender identities in an Asian context from both human rights and health perspectives. The project will contribute to the national research priority of understanding Australia's place in the region through building link ....Global/Local Intersections: History, Identity and Community in a Tokyo Subculture. Gender violence, women's empowerment and human rights in Melanesia: exploring the French connection. This project examines the varied prevalence and acceptance of gender violence in Francophone and Anglophone Melanesian countries. It challenges the predominant view that the promotion of women's human rights ideals, in isolation from broader empowerment strategies, will encourage women to resist their exposure to this violence.
Sexual contracts in Burma and Cambodia: Intersections of Desire, Duty and Debt. Prostitution, sex trafficking, and violence against women are global concerns. A better understanding of the underlying context that permits women and children to be abused in this manner in other cultures will allow Australia to assist in addressing these problems - in our own multicultural society and abroad - in a culturally appropriate manner that will prove far more effective than current approaches.
