Repatriation and release of Japanese war criminals 1946-1958: Southeast Asia, Japan and the Great Powers. Japanese war criminals held in Southeast Asia were repatriated and released in Japan from the late 1940s. Releases were negotiated between Japan and the nation that had convicted the prisoner. The project provides new understandings of the emergence of Southeast Asian states in regional diplomacy and of Japan's re-emergence as a regional power.
Malay Music and Dance from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island. In the Indian Ocean Territories of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island live the oldest established Malay-Muslim communities within the Commonwealth of Australia. This project examines the history and practice of Malay music traditions through a pioneering ethnomusicological study of music and dance, examining these traditions as key factors in preserving and strengthening unique cultural identities. This project analyses for the first time the culmination of politicised and bloody conflict along lines of Islamic religious identity within Javanese society - today 100-million strong and Indonesia's largest ethnic group - and the subsequent decline and depoliticisation of those religiously defined categories, c. 1920-present. This process has left Javanese society more deeply Isla ....Islam and identity in Java: the violent culmination and subsequent decline of communal conflict, c. 1920- present. This project analyses for the first time the culmination of politicised and bloody conflict along lines of Islamic religious identity within Javanese society - today 100-million strong and Indonesia's largest ethnic group - and the subsequent decline and depoliticisation of those religiously defined categories, c. 1920-present. This process has left Javanese society more deeply Islamised than at any time in its history. But conflicting categories might, in theory, be repoliticised. The 2004 election campaign will be crucial for this analysis. The resultant book will be the last of three analysing the Islamisation of the Javanese from the 14th century to the present.

This project will study the alleged absence of postcolonialism in Indonesia with a focus on Indonesians of European, Chinese and Indian descent. The various ways in which postcolonial consciousness might be expressed in public life will be explored, and further give due recognition to Indonesia's greater cultural diversity.
