The establishment of AUSSGrid will enhance the ability of social scientists in academic, government and private sectors, to digitise, preserve and disseminate social science data holdings of national significance. AUSSGrid will allow social scientists to better co-ordinate research, avoid unnecessary duplication of data collection, and maximise researcher access to the products of government funded research. It will create a resource base that will enable the social sciences to take advantage of emerging grid technologies. These developments will have implications for how research is devised, conducted and disseminated, with major applications in government administration and policy-making.Read moreRead less

The efficient integration of geographic information from different sources (termed geoinformation fusion) is recognized internationally as a major problem for projects that rely on geographic information. Conventional geoinformation fusion procedures require manual assistance from human experts. This project will lead to increased speed, reliability, and economy for this task, by automating the process of geoinformation fusion. Many different application domains will benefit from these improvements to geoinformation fusion procedures, including emergency response systems (for example, helping to combine different data about the structural characteristics of buildings as part of a housing damage assessment following an earthquake).Read moreRead less

Record linkage aims at matching records of the same entity (like customer or patient) in large (administrative) databases. The outcomes of the proposed research will improve current techniques in terms of efficiency, accuracy and the need for human intervention. Through experimental studies and stochastic modelling the performance of traditional and new methods for data cleaning, standardisation and linkage will be assessed. The effect of the statistical dependency of attribute values will be studied. New methods using clustering for blocking large datasets, and predictive models including interaction terms will be implemented, analysed and evaluated on high-performance computers and office-based PC clusters.

Developing a global environmental, social and economic information system. The outcome of this project will be a unique environmental information system that will open up new global analytical perspectives for international institutions, corporations and academia. It will enable decision makers to identify hidden impacts of global supply chains that could so far not be enumerated. This research will enhance Australia's international reputation in spearheading advances in Environmental Accounting ....Developing a global environmental, social and economic information system. The outcome of this project will be a unique environmental information system that will open up new global analytical perspectives for international institutions, corporations and academia. It will enable decision makers to identify hidden impacts of global supply chains that could so far not be enumerated. This research will enhance Australia's international reputation in spearheading advances in Environmental Accounting. It will fulfill ubiquitous needs of analysts worldwide, and become a sought-after export. It will demonstrate how Australians affect the global environment, and how we can improve it by changing the way we live and consume. This research is truly inter-disciplinary, and will benefit a multitude of other research areas.Read moreRead less
Data integration, scale and classification of remotely sensed imagery. This project will investigate and resolve the specific problems associated with processing, interpreting and classifying high-resolution satellite imagery. Previous work has shown that current algorithms developed for lower resolution remote sensing data are not appropriate for processing higher resolution data. New algorithms will be developed for geometrically and radiometrically processing high-resolution satellite data so that it can be interpreted in conjunction with other similar data, or existing lower resolution data. Consequently, the potential uses of high resolution satellite imagery will be greatly increased, allowing many more users to access the advantages of this unique source of data.Read moreRead less

This project will develop a global model for healthcare based on the groundbreaking Protocol Hypothesis Testing (PHT) system, allowing expert groups of clinicians to create and share knowledge across organizations. The PHT is a unique functioning knowledge management system that allows clinicians to record patient and treatment data as it is generated in clinical practice and applies scientific methods to generate clinical knowledge, all in real-time. The project will develop and test a framework for the PHT system to be used cooperatively by expert groups across virtual organizations, refining the PHT system in the process.Read moreRead less
Precision Pulsar Timing and its Applications. The rapidly rotating pulsars known as millisecond pulsars have period stabilities which rival that of the best terrestrial clocks. Observations of many millisecond pulsars spread across the sky should allow detection of the gravitational-wave background - likely to be the first direct detection of gravity waves. It will also enable establishment of a long-term time standard which is independent of and probably superior to that derived from terrestria ....Precision Pulsar Timing and its Applications. For astronomy in particular, shared use is essential because of the very wide bandwidths needed to obtain sufficient sensitivity. Usage of the radio spectrum is increasing rapidly and radio telescopes are becoming more and more sensitive, compounding the problems. The digital signal processing techniques developed under this project will be widely applicable, not only to future radio astronomy facilities such as the Square Kilometer Array, but also to the communications industry generally.Read moreRead less
