The continual miniaturisation of mechanical and electronic components for biomedical, aerospace and industrial products is driving the demand for advanced fabrication techniques. Femtosecond laser micromachining in particular is emerging as a critical manufacturing process for these components and other new and unprecedented applications.
The project will build up strong links between the Photonics Institute in Vienna, Austria, which is noted for their achievements in the development of femtosecond light sources, and the CLA, which has an excellent reputation for its expert knowledge in laser material processing. It is therefore believed to be beneficial for research in both countries.

Automated Integrity Assessment of Self-Piercing Rivet Joints: i4.0 Approach. Lightweighting in the car industry by the use of aluminium reduces emissions substantially. It entails joining the car body sections by self-piercing rivets rather than the traditional spot welds. We aim to fill the technology gap for effective quality control of these joints. The project expects to solve the problem by merging industry 4.0 principles, three-dimensional X-ray technology, machine learning computer vision ....Automated Integrity Assessment of Self-Piercing Rivet Joints: i4.0 Approach. Lightweighting in the car industry by the use of aluminium reduces emissions substantially. It entails joining the car body sections by self-piercing rivets rather than the traditional spot welds. We aim to fill the technology gap for effective quality control of these joints. The project expects to solve the problem by merging industry 4.0 principles, three-dimensional X-ray technology, machine learning computer vision and structural mechanics. The expected outcomes are technologies for automation-friendly assessment of these joints. This should benefit industries from medical to electronics to automatically spot a random and delicate abnormality within a solid of complex geometry, such as that in live tissue or an electronic circuit.Read moreRead less

Guaranteeing the safety of short welds in automotive applications. Most safety-critical welds in the automotive and related industries are of short duration (less than three seconds). We will develop a unified theoretical model of short welds which accounts for all important phenomena. Using this model, we will create the first system to check every safety-critical weld in real time, with 3D data objects that use all the data available from the non-stationary process. The aim of this project is to investigate methods and techniques that, given an ab initio design requirement, allow databases of knowledge from previous designs to be intelligently searched for similar patterns, both geometric and physical state, that will assess the likelihood of a successful design and suggest potential alternatives based on previous experience
The plan is to approach the research problem from a machine learning/pattern recognition point of view. By mapping the characterized properties into a search space of reduced dimensionality in which feature patterns have been pre-classified through supervised training, it should be possible to identify similar features.

Dimensional Control of Stamped Components for Optimized Assembly Operations. Dimensional control is one of the most important challenges in automotive body assembly. The aim of this project is to develop a method of characterizing dimensional variation in a stamped sheet formed parts such that the effect of this variation on assemblies can be analysed. This will lead to an approach to flexible fixturing to minimizing assembly dimensional variation and improve dimensional quality.
