ARC Training Centre in Lightweight Automotive Structures. This training centre aims to train a cohort of industry-focused researchers and to develop new lightweighting technologies, which are key to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2 emissions in transportation. In partnership with domestic and international companies and universities, this centre intends to develop new lightweight materials, advanced manufacturing processes, energy storage designs, and rapid non-destructive evaluation techniques. The intended outcome is to accelerate the transformation of Australia's automotive industry—now facing unprecedented structural adjustment—from vehicle production to export of design and engineering services, high-value products, and novel technology solutions.Read moreRead less
Rapid process development for the assembly of lightweight metal components. This project aims to develop a new quality monitoring system and inverse method for identifying parameters of welding structures for automotive applications. The outcomes may assist automotive industries in improving process quality management and product performance of weld structures.

Beam steering by Huygens metasurfaces for sensing applications. This project aims to develop steerable radar systems for navigation sensors and surround monitoring in vehicles, using antennas operating in the millimetre-wave range, which have improved resolution and maintain long sensing distances. The boom in radar sensing technologies used for safety and comfort in cars has stimulated the need for cost-effective directional antennas for beam steering in sensing applications. This project will use the recently discovered concept of Huygens metasurfaces, which enable cost-effective devices with low transmission losses and strong tuning of beam-steering angle. The wider availability of such radars is expected to enhance collision prevention systems, adaptive cruise control and ultimately help create self-navigating cars.Read moreRead less
Stamp forming of lightweight fibre-metal laminate systems. A key criteria in the development of new vehicles is weight reduction. The aim of this project is to investigate the formability of fibre metal laminates (FMLs) for automotive applications. These hybrid material systems have significant advantages in terms of strength, weight, noise and impact reduction over metals. The major research issue addressed here is how can such materials be formed for volume production.

The Centre will build skills and capability to test and deploy safe, socially acceptable, automated vehicles (AV) for rural, regional and remote Australian public roads, where manufacturing, agriculture, mining and defence industries face significant challenges of driver shortages, rising costs, long distances, rough roads, and environmental impacts. The centre will unite technology providers, regulators, government and end users with world-leading interdisciplinary researchers to create new human-AV systems, datasets, frameworks, case studies, platforms, and a vastly upskilled workforce. This will reduce transport costs, increase capacity, boost supply chain efficiency and resilience, improve road safety, and elevate Australian capability.Read moreRead less
Low emission road transportation: harnessing the potential of alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies through online optimisation. This project will develop fundamental mathematical theory and use it to enable the best possible CO2 reduction capability in road vehicles. The cost of different technologies and fuels will then be compared to determine the most cost effective approaches to reduce road transport emissions.
Pedal and motor cycle helmet performance study. Cycling is a form of recreation and transport. Both pedal and motor cyclists are exposed to risks of head and neck injury. These injuries occur in young people and can have substantial health and economic impacts on the individuals and society. It is believed that injury rates can be reduced and an active lifestyle encouraged by improving helmet performance and understanding factors that lead to non-use. It is believed that injury rates can be reduced and an active lifestyle encouraged by improving helmet performance and understanding factors that lead to non-use. As helmet use is mandatory it is important that Australians are provided with optimal helmets. The specification of product standards is also relevant for international trade agreements. This project aims to demonstrate the utility of the thermal transport by design approach to develop functionally graded reactive materials that allow for fast and efficient solar thermo-chemical fuel production. Prediction capabilities will be developed to optimise multi-scale radiative and gas transport coupled with non-stoichiometric redox reactions. Synthesis gas production will be demonstrated using the new structures in a prototype solar thermochemical reactor under high-flux irradiation. This project aims to advance the fields of thermal sciences and high-temperature solar thermochemical processing and expand the engineering knowledge base to pave the way to sustainable transportation with the existing infrastructure.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to investigate methods and techniques that, given an ab initio design requirement, allow databases of knowledge from previous designs to be intelligently searched for similar patterns, both geometric and physical state, that will assess the likelihood of a successful design and suggest potential alternatives based on previous experience
The plan is to approach the research problem from a machine learning/pattern recognition point of view. By mapping the characterized properties into a search space of reduced dimensionality in which feature patterns have been pre-classified through supervised training, it should be possible to identify similar features.

Dimensional Control of Stamped Components for Optimized Assembly Operations. Dimensional control is one of the most important challenges in automotive body assembly. The aim of this project is to develop a method of characterizing dimensional variation in a stamped sheet formed parts such that the effect of this variation on assemblies can be analysed. This will lead to an approach to flexible fixturing to minimizing assembly dimensional variation and improve dimensional quality.
