Summary
Sedentary behaviours and physical inactivity play a major role in the rising prevalence of obesity among children in Australia. This intervention study will take place in the school and family settings which play a critical role in shaping children's health behaviours. The objective is to determine whether a 2-year behavioural intervention reduces sedentary behaviour and promotes physical activity and results in improved health among 8-9 year old children.
RCT Of A Client-centred, Caseworker-delivered Smoking Cessation Intervention For A Socially Disadvantated Population

Summary
Smoking among the socially disadvantaged is unacceptably high. Little is known about the best way to reduce smoking among the disadvantaged. This study aims to lower smoking rates among clients attending community social services. Given smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and illness, the study has the potential to impact on the health and well-being of a particularly vulnerable sector of the community.

In Australia, one in four school-aged children is currently overweight and childhood obesity rates are continuing to rise. In the last five years it has become clear that rates of overweight and obesity are also rapidly increasing in pre-school age children. These are issues that are of concern to health officials as well as to parents. We understand that these rising rates in fatness relate to children's diet and activity patterns, and that these patterns, once established are likely to be patt ....In Australia, one in four school-aged children is currently overweight and childhood obesity rates are continuing to rise. To date, there has been relatively little research regarding the chance to support parents to establish the eating and activity patterns that will protect their children from the very beginning of life. This project seeks to support first-time parents to establish healthy eating and activity behaviours in their children using the highly utilised Maternal and Child Health Centres first time parents' groups. We believe that these groups will provide a strongly supportive environment in which to provide parents with strategies and knowledge for promoting healthy eating and activity patterns for their children, and in turn, promote healthy weight gain. Reducing Alcohol-related Harm In Rural Communities

In 1992 in Australia, there were an estimated 3,660 alcohol-related deaths and 71,593 alcohol-related hospital episodes, resulting in a total economic cost of $4,031.9 million, 84% of which was avoidable. In 1998, about half of all males and a third of all females drank at least once a month at levels that placed them at risk of harm. In NSW, alcohol was estimated as being a causal factor in about one-quarter of all road traffic deaths in 1995 and was associated with a 58% increase in hospital u ....In 1992 in Australia, there were an estimated 3,660 alcohol-related deaths and 71,593 alcohol-related hospital episodes, resulting in a total economic cost of $4,031.9 million, 84% of which was avoidable. The burden of suffering appears disproportionately higher in rural areas of NSW: per capita rate of convictions associated with a prescribed alcohol concentration in rural towns was approximately double that in metropolitan areas in 2000. The rate of attendances at hospital accident and emergency departments was also higher in rural areas. These data suggest a need for additional effort to reduce alcohol-related harm in rural, relative to metropolitan, areas. In Australia, there have been no well-controlled, community-based, attempts to reduce alcohol-related harm by simultaneously implementing a range of interventions. The conduct of a large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the effectiveness of this approach is difficult to justify, due to the substantial costs associated with such a rigorous design. However, a less rigorus, though equally valid, design, such as a stepped wedged approach, would likely provide good evidence to justify the subsequent conduct of an RCT. If the expected outcomes are not achieved, the conduct of an RCT can be postponed until reasonable preliminary evidence regarding the types of community-based interventions most likely to be effective is obtained. In either case, this study will provide valuable information as to which community-based interventions, and in what combination, are most likely to reduce the occurrence of alcohol-related harm in rural communities in Australia.Read moreRead less

People seem to prefer to drive to the corner shop rather than walking. Or, they will drive the car to work instead of walking to the bus or train. Or, they send off e-mails instead of walking down the corridor at work. The result is that people are not using up the energy that they should and they get fatter. The average weight of many groups of Australians has gone up by several kilograms in the past 10 years. Active people not only have healthier weights. They are less likely to get heart dise ....People seem to prefer to drive to the corner shop rather than walking. Or, they will drive the car to work instead of walking to the bus or train. Or, they send off e-mails instead of walking down the corridor at work. The result is that people are not using up the energy that they should and they get fatter. The average weight of many groups of Australians has gone up by several kilograms in the past 10 years. Active people not only have healthier weights. They are less likely to get heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. But too many people do no exercise at all. Only about 10% of Australians adults do fitness and sporting activities three or more times a week. More than half do not walk, cycle or do anything moderately active on any regular basis. To get people to be regularly active and to stay active, promoting deliberate 'exercise' is not the answer. Making it easier for people to choose to be more active as they go about their daily lives will be more effective. Road transport researchers and geographers have a lot to offer to health researchers. They have found that where there are footpaths and cycle ways, where shops and businesses are close by or where the roads make it easy and safe to get from place to place, people are much more likely to walk or ride bikes. We can now use large, complex computerised databases (called Geographic Information Systems) to put together this type of information on peoples' local environments. We will combine these 'geographic' data with other information from surveys on people's physical activity, exercise and transport habits. Starting our research in this way, we will be able to work out whether there are factors in people's local environments that really do make them less active. Physical activity is one of the most powerful contributors to health, but population levels of activity are low. General practitioners (GPs) are well placed to provide physical activity counselling, but many are too busy. This project examines the effectiveness of referral of insufficiently active adults to an exercise physiologist (EP), using step counts from a pedometer as the outcome. We compare usual care from the GP with: (1) 5 EP visits, and (2) a single visit and telephone follow up.

The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate a low cost, accessible, sustainable and replicable, home based physical activity and nutrition program for older people aged 55 to 70 that will ultimately reduce chronic disease (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), and improve mental health.
