Summary
Complex networked social systems. A recurring contemporary theme across many social science disciplines is the significant role of social networks in shaping the course of interpersonal interactions and their cascading social consequences. The aim of this Initiative is to build a multi- disciplinary Research Network spanning the social and mathematical sciences that can develop a new interdisciplinary science of networks and network-based social processes. Aftercare for young people: A sociological study of resource opportunities. This project aims to understand the resourcing opportunities and needs of young people in the first year after exiting alcohol and drug (AOD) treatment. AOD treatment is successful for many people, yet it is also common for people to ‘relapse’ or return to treatment and to experience multiple periods of engagement, drop-out and re-engagement. A comparative sociocultural and bioethical study of uterus transplants . This socio-cultural study aims to undertake a comparative study of the new Australian Uterine Transplant (UTx) trial with established and emerging UTx programs in the US and India. This multi-disciplinary project aims to be the first to explore the Australian public's awareness of new developments in genetic science that allow healthy individuals to access their own genetic makeup. Called 'personal genomics', this broad group of genetic tests can be used for a variety of purposes that include ancestry, paternity, sporting ability and health. The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. This project investigates the challenges posed by cultural diversity in multicultural schools. It will focus specifically on students from Arabic-speaking background (ASB) attending secondary schools in the Northern and Western regions of Melbourne. The study will assess whether individual students' attitudes and the schools' structures and pedagogical ideology impact upon ASB students' achievements. ....The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. This project investigates the challenges posed by cultural diversity in multicultural schools. It will focus specifically on students from Arabic-speaking background (ASB) attending secondary schools in the Northern and Western regions of Melbourne. In using focus group discussions and attitudinal surveys, the study will also test the cultural appropriateness of such methodological procedures. Refugees employment aspirations and inter-generational communication about future occupational pathways. This project is the first to investigate the long-term employment aspirations of recently arrived refugees and how they communicate them to their children. Findings will inform policy and service delivery aimed at helping these people to achieve the potential they bring to Australia.
