The Effectiveness Of Motivational Enhancement Therapy For Obese Patients And Support Partners
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$547,644.00
Summary
Tbe obesity pandemic has been described by leading researchers as a problem out of control, with lifestyle interventions generally resulting in regain of treatment-induced weight losses. The present study will evaluate the effectiveness of motivational enhancement therapy (MET) for both patients and their support partners in helping obese patients to achieve long-term weight losses by sustaining their motivation for making difficult lifestyle changes over time.

Summary
Interplay between plasticity and senescence. This project aims at bridging two fundamental human stressors together in a quantitative genetic framework. The environment changes globally on a huge scale coupled with effect on the age-structures and genetic composition of countless populations by over-harvesting and exploitation. This project will provide significant benefits, such as potential strategies of dealing with future human-induced changes more effectively.
Fiddling while home burns: climate change and fiddler crabs. Climate change is already affecting many Australian animals, including fiddler crabs. This project will use extensive knowledge of fiddler crab biology to determine whether they can behaviourally compensate for the rapid changes that are occurring by using experiments and observations conducted under natural conditions in the mangroves of Darwin harbour.
Fitness in free-living populations in a changing world. We understand very little about the evolutionary and ecological response of populations to periods of rapid environmental change or volatility. New methods raise the possibility dissecting the various causes of change, and their demographic consequences. However, these methods depend on long-term studies of the genealogy, survival and reproductive success of individuals. Data on the iconic superb fairy-wren will be used to establish this species as a model for the study of climate change, and the extent to which living in social groups helps or hinders evolutionary response to such change.Read moreRead less
Behavioural And Health Services Research In Ophthalmology: Gaining And Implementing Evidence To Improve Patient Outcomes.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$253,465.00
Summary
This research program is focused on improving the outcomes for people with eye disease. Through a number of projects in different health care settings including ophthalmic services, low vision rehabilitation services and residential care, this research program will implement and evaluate new treatments or models of care that can improve people’s well-being, quality of life and clinical outcomes in a cost-effective manner.
The Ecstasy Check-Up: A Multi-site Trial Of A Brief Intervention For Ecstasy Use Among Regular Ecstasy Users
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$458,432.00
Summary
Rates of ecstasy use have continued to rise rapidly over the past 10-15 years, particularly among young people. This is of concern, as several studies indicate that ecstasy is associated with a range of short- and long-term harms. Although many users acknowledge risks associated with ecstasy use, few users seek treatment. Therefore, the current project will aim to reduce ecstasy use and harm by providing non-treatment seeking ecstasy users with a brief motivational intervention.
RCT Of A Client-centred, Caseworker-delivered Smoking Cessation Intervention For A Socially Disadvantated Population
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$440,217.00
Summary
Smoking among the socially disadvantaged is unacceptably high. Little is known about the best way to reduce smoking among the disadvantaged. This study aims to lower smoking rates among clients attending community social services. Given smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and illness, the study has the potential to impact on the health and well-being of a particularly vulnerable sector of the community.
Tracking warning signals across a variable landscape. This project aims to investigate how local environmental factors and predator communities affect warning colour expression across the Australian landscape. Warning colours protect toxic prey from predators who learn to associate the colours with an unpleasant taste. Warning colours protect toxic prey from predators who learn to associate the colours with an unpleasant taste. This project will utilise Australia's excellent environmental and biodiversity informatics infrastructure to inform the public and decision makers about the adaptability of animals to environmental change such as predator loss.Read moreRead less
