The Centre for Research Excellence in Nursing Interventions for Hospitalised Patients will provide evidence to improve the nursing care of a broad range of hospitalised patients who are at risk of complications related to compromised skin integrity and poor pain/anxiety management. Systematic reviews and clinical trials will provide the basis for developing clinical practice guidelines to assist nurses in providing high quality care to the 3.5 million Australians admitted to hospital each year.

An online collaborative design process is emerging in response to the global economy, increasing complexity of visual communication design projects and rapid developments in Internet technology. Research is required to identify and address the interdependence of various social, physical and technical factors that affect online design collaboration. The Omnium Project is an experiment that uses its unique framework to test online modes of interaction (physical) and collaboration (social) for visual communication designers. The outcome will produce an online technical-system and formalise a documented conceptual-approach for effective online collaborative design in visual communication.Read moreRead less

Testing the Australian Megatsunami Hypothesis. More than 300000 lives and property worth more than $150bn on the NSW coast are vulnerable to large tsunamis but at present we do not have a clear idea about how often such tsunamis occur and how big they might be. This project will identify and date evidence for past tsunamis on the coasts of NSW and west New Zealand which will help us understand regional tsunami risk. The introduction of Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) will have an immediate and lasting impact on the cost of doing business in Australia. By determining how accounting processes can be optimised to identify, measure and analyse the impact of emissions trading on organisations' financial performance, this project will be a significant step in minimising the negative impact of this historic change on the Australian economy, and maximising the associated business opportunities. Our findings will be the basis for giving the accounting profession the new skills to adopt a central role in meeting the carbon challenge.Read moreRead less

This project will provide a comprehensive understanding of avenues available for the accounting profession to more formally embrace the management of environmental and social aspects of organisational performance. In particular, the project examines the internal sustainability information gathering and reporting processes and the use of this information by internal decision makers. We investigate, inter alia, existing systems/procedures used to generate data on non-financial performance and how sustainability data can be collected efficiently and better integrated through the accounting system; and how accounting systems could be extended to incorporate such information, including specific tools that are appropriate to achieve this aim.Read moreRead less

This project aims to improve the relevance and reliability of extended reporting now being required of not-for-profit organisations (NFPOs). Society is increasingly demanding that NFPOs disclose additional information beyond financial information, as evidenced by the service performance reporting and integrated reporting initiatives. These reporting initiatives better align the reporting with the mission of NFPOs: to achieve outcomes that are beyond financial returns. This project aims to evaluate and to aid the development and implementation of these extended reporting responsibilities and mechanisms that increase the quality and credibility of the information. This would improve the relevance of the information produced by NFPOs and increase confidence in extended reporting.Read moreRead less

Treatment Of Acute Otitis Media (AOM) In Low Risk Aboriginal Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,640,326.00
Summary
A randomised clinical trial design will be used to compare two different approaches to the treatment of acute middle ear infections in Aboriginal children living in urban communities: initial observation or immediate antibiotic prescription. The relative acceptability and cost effectiveness of treatment options will be studied. The evidence will allow primary care clinicians to confidently recommend treatment that maximises health benefits and reduces complications such as hearing impairment.
