Novel strategies in the design and development of antivirals against dengue virus. Globally, there are 50-100 million cases of dengue fever, with 500,000 cases of the more severe dengue haemorrhagic fever, each year. Australia has between 100 and 900 cases of dengue infection annually, often from travellers, but disease outbreaks occur in northern Australia. Australia has between 100 and 900 cases of dengue infection annually, often from travellers, but disease outbreaks occur in northern Australia. Effective anti-viral treatment will reduce disease burden. The project contributes to an evidence-based drug design program in collaboration with Australia's leading biotechnology industries. As a biotechnology industry project developing treatments for an emerging disease, it contributes to the national research priorities of Frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industries, Promoting and maintaining good health and Safeguarding Australia.Read moreRead less
Platform Technologies for the Regulation of Peptide Hormones. Research in the field of this application is expected to contribute to the social and economic welfare of Australians. It is anticipated that a platform of technologies will be developed, for the treatment of human and animal disorders associated with imbalances in levels of peptide hormones. This will provide better therapies to improve human and animal health. Related potential applications include the development of more effective ....Platform Technologies for the Regulation of Peptide Hormones. The range of new materials and protocols that will result from the research will be suitable for commercial exploitation. Particular benefit to Australians will result from the research being carried out locally, where the intellectual property and expertise will be developed and maintained.Read moreRead less
Single Molecule Studies of Replisomal Function. It has recently become possible to watch the copying of DNA molecules with a specialized microscope in real time. This process requires assembly of a complex molecular machine on the DNA, followed by triggering of its function, and yields exquisitely detailed information about how the machine works. In this new collaboration between scientists in Australia and the U.S.A., we will assemble these machines on single DNA molecules, watch how they work and simultaneously measure the very small forces that the machines generate. This will give Australian scientists access to a new technology for studying molecular machines.Read moreRead less

The twenty first century is said to be the century of biology. And there is no doubt that the development of our understanding of biological system is continuing at a massive rate. However as our understanding deepens, we need to draw on the whole range of scientific disciplines to proceed. This Centre draws together a multidisciplinary team of world-leading scientists to address one the key questions in modern biology, the structure of a membrane protein. We will develop techniques based on the latest developments in theoretical physics & chemistry, imaging, biology and technology - including the new Australian Synchrotron - to create new approaches to structural biology.Read moreRead less

The aim of the project is develop synthetic compounds that specifically and reversibly activate or inhibit ryanodine receptor calcium release channels, and will thus increase or reduce the force developed by skeletal muscle and the heart. The compounds will be useful in biomedical and veterinary sciences and in the livestock industry. Some of the compounds that are not effective on mammalian ryandine receptor isoforms might interact with insect channels and provide a template for a new class of insecticides. The compounds will be based on naturally occurring peptides which specifically and reversibly modulate mammalian calcium channels.Read moreRead less
