Computational Molecular Science (CMS) involves the use of theory and computational methods to simulate and visualise molecular systems ranging from small atmospheric species to proteins, nucleic acids, chemical polymers and materials. It represents our most incisive expression of what we understand about the molecular basis of nature. The CMS network will integrate and cross-fertilize both fundamental and application-based expertize in molecular scale computations in the fields of nanoscience, biomaterials, biotechnology, biomedical science and environmental science. It will uncover and explore critical new interdisciplinary science and create new molecular-based paradigms that will drive advances in these fields over the next decade.Read moreRead less

The aim is to establish a facility that will use a robotic NMR instrument to help in the characterisation of drug-protein interactions and in the discovery of new drugs or agrichemicals. The significance is that with the wealth of new information arising on protein sequences from genomics programs there is an urgent need to accelerate the rate of discovery of ligands that bind to these proteins. Such ligands may provide useful drug leads or help in defining the function of newly discovered proteins. The outcomes will be new knowledge on protein structure and function, and potentially, new bio-active molecules.Read moreRead less

One in three men and one in four women in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer before they reach 75. Cancer is a leading cause of death within this country with 28% of deaths each year due to this disease. Although there have been advances in the treatment of various forms of cancer there remains a pressing need for new therapies with improved potency, selectivity and reduced side effects. This project will provide new compounds of potential clinical use in the treatment of cancer, thereby aiding the large population of Australians who will be affected by this disease. Furthermore, the new advanced materials produced by this project will aid in the study of biochemical processes involved in cancer.Read moreRead less

Free radical chemistry is of increasing importance in the manufacture of improved plastics, paints and related materials, in helping restrict oxidative processes that can lead to adverse human health and also to the degradation of important industrial materials. The research will contribute to promoting & maintaining good health by developing new methods for reducing the impacts of ageing as well as in the treatment of several life-threatening conditions such as stroke. Industrial applications include better surface coatings for preserving metals, and additives to improve the quality and shelf life of beer and wines.Read moreRead less

Marine snails from the waters off the Australian coast produce an amazing variety of mini-proteins in their venoms called conotoxins that they use to capture prey. These conotoxins bind very specifically to receptors in our body associated with the transmission of nerve signals. We will use natural and synthetically modified conotoxins to selectively block particular types of neuronal 'receptors' to gain a greater understanding of how the nervous system functions. This knowledge will help in the design of new drugs to treat a variety of diseases and disorders. Essentially we will use a chemical armoury developed by the cone snail to design state-of-the-art mini-protein drugs.Read moreRead less

The Network in Fluorescence applications in biotechnology and life sciences will coordinate a research program relating to applications of fluorescence whose proper resolution requires a high degree of interaction between biology, physics, chemistry, bioengineering and medicine. These would be applied to industrially relevant problems in areas such as public health, biotechnology, safety of foods, chemical biology and environmental monitoring. Approaches such as highly selective fluorescent labelling of targets using appropriate immunological and molecular techniques and purpose-engineered fluorochromes accompanied by the development of specialised instrumentation will capitalise on the multi-disciplinary research strengths in Australia and lead towards tangible industrial outcomes.
