Interpretative and predictive tools are needed for the comprehensive understanding of directed cell migration in the medical sciences. Mathematical models and modelling methodologies developed in this project will make a significant contribution to the investigation of cell migration and the testing and generation of hypotheses. Such models are needed to understand observed cellular patterns. This project will contribute to knowledge of normal and abnormal developmental processes, especially in embryonic growth. Understanding these processes should lead to prediction and treatment of congenital disorders and contribute to a healthy start to life.Read moreRead less
Genome dynamics following plastid endosymbiosis. Plastid endosymbiosis events (enslavement of an algal cell inside of a host cell to form a plastid) are difficult to pinpoint because the genomic data required for a broad array of species are rarely available. Furthermore, the classical method used to infer endosymbiotic gene transfers is being criticised. This project will elucidate the origin of chlorarachniophyte and dinoflagellate plastids and characterise the genome dynamics following endosymbiosis. It uses densely sampled genome data obtained with high-throughput sequencing technologies. Simulation studies will be used to evaluate methods for inferring endosymbiotic gene transfer and alignment-free methods will be used to improve phylogenomic pipelines.Read moreRead less

Breakthough nanotechnologies based on quantum mechanics promise useful devices for absolutely secure transmission of information encoded in quantum states, ultra-rapid searching through genome databases for unique gene sequences, faster electronic and photonic devices, robust devices made from diamond and better processing of biomedical materials for diagnosis of illness. Fabrication and characterization of these devices provides training for research students in state-of-the-art techniques with many uses. Deeper understanding of these quantum technologies will lead to better models for some of the most puzzling aspects of quantum mechanical systems that are the foundation of the physical processes of
our universe.Read moreRead less

The use of nanoparticles in heat transfer fluids, then known as nanofluids, increases their specific heat and thermal conductivity. Recent experimental works highlight that anomalous transport phenomena are evident in nanofluids that cannot be adequately described by classical conservation laws. We will extend these conservation laws to incorporate fractional operators to capture the fluid memory effects and the impact of particle clustering. Computational modelling and experimental investigations will be undertaken to identify the heat transfer mechanisms of various nanofluids. The outcomes of the work will increase knowledge on nanofluids and offer a significant opportunity to improve the efficiency of many thermal engineering systems.Read moreRead less
Random network models with applications in biology. Complex biological systems consist of a large number of interacting agents or components, and so can be studied using mathematical random network models. We aim to gain deeper insights into the laws emerging as the random networks evolve in time. This can help us to deal with dangerous disease epidemics and better understand the human brain.
Random Discrete Structures: Approximations and Applications. The behaviour of many real world systems can be modelled by random discrete structures evolving over time. For example, the sizes of populations of frogs in some close patches of forests can be modelled as interacting random processes. The aim of the project is to investigate large discrete random structures that arise from real world application in areas such as biology, complex networks and insurance. The proposed project is at the interface of mathematics and 'big data' applications and so the work of the project aims to provide theoretical and heuristic underpinnings useful in the algorithms and techniques of practitioners. Understanding the applications in the project requires new, broadly applicable methods and developing such is a complementary aim.Read moreRead less
Characterisation Of Two Novel Markers Of Osteosarcoma Metastasis As Potential Therapeutic Targets
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$624,500.00
Summary
Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common bone tumour in children and adolescents. In spite of aggressive chemotherapy, OS tumours that metastasise to the lungs result in dismal long-term survivals of only 10-20%. For these patients, new treatment options are desperately needed. In this proposal we show compelling data identifying two new markers of OS metastasis. This research aims to validate the suitability of these novel markers as therapeutic targets to prevent OS metastasis.
