Over the next few decades there is an anticipated steady increase in surgical intervention for bone, cartilage and tendon damages due to trauma or osteoporosis as a consequence of an aging population. These damages cause chronic pain, immobility, restricted activities, and, sometimes, death and are a considerable financial burden to the Australian Health System.

Summary
This grant will support research necessary to develop the next generation of vaccines. These will combat diseases caused by bacteria and viruses and can also be used to fight cancer. The broad range of application is made possible through the incorporation of simple molecular features that activate the immune system. The intellectual property that has been developed is protected by a patent portfolio some patents of which are already licenced to the pharmaceutical industry.
My research focuses on understanding pathobiological mechanisms in acute and chronic neurodegenerative conditions such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease which have large burdens on the community through health care costs and on families because of the lack of effective treatments. An improved understanding of how brain cells die and of how the most abundant brain cell, the astrocyte, can be engineered to be a resource for regenerative medicine offer promise for improved clinical management.
The goal of this research is to improve outcomes for people at risk of becoming blind or visually impaired. The focus is on those who require a corneal transplant, or who suffer from inflammatory eye disease or painful disease of the ocular surface, on neonates with retinopathy of prematurity, or those with the eye disease, keratoconus. We will investigate new treatment options for eye diseases and will examine the evidence for the success of surgical and other therapeutic interventions.
