The project aims to improve the accuracy of automatic location identification of GPS enabled handsets in third-generation cellular networks via a modified Differential GPS method. The proposed sub-metre location ability will be a value-added service of the network providers and will appeal to a wide sector of users. The challenge is to develop a cost effective solution by utilising existing network infrastructure. We propose to use the GPS timing units in 3G networks for deriving local GPS position corrections; and to transfer these corrections to the users via the 3G data bursts of the beacons or other user data broadcasts.Read moreRead less

Electromagnetic field strength simulator (ELMO) for RF hazard assessment. There is significant community fear related to exposure to mobile telephone radiation. The computer program ELMO will be designed to accept information about all RF transmitters in the vicinity of cellular telephone towers from an existing database, and to calculate the total field strength. This will allow hazard assessment for both RF technicians working on the tower and adjacent residents.

Public key cryptography is now mainstream technology and an essential tool in electronic business. In order to go beyond the basic security services of confidentiality and authentication, additional features are now desirable, such as verifiability of encryption, distributed key generation, and group-oriented encryption and signatures. At the same time the increasing demand for mobile business requires public key implementations with minimal computational and storage demands. This project will study five recently proposed public key algorithms and assess their suitability for various secure applications. These results are of significant potential value in Australia's electronic commerce market.Read moreRead less

Modelling Human-Body Effects on Indoor Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Channels for Broadband Wireless Systems. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies use a number of antennas to send multiple signals as a way to significantly increase the speed, range and reliability of a wireless network. The upcoming IEEE 802.11n standard, which includes MIMO in its specifications, will offer up to eight times the coverage and up to six times the speed of currently available IEEE 802.11 products. The upcoming IEEE 802.11n standard, which includes MIMO in its specifications, will offer up to eight times the coverage and up to six times the speed of currently available IEEE 802.11 products. Through comprehensive measurement campaigns, this project will characterise the time-varying human body effect on indoor MIMO systems in populated environments, such as busy industrial and commercial buildings. Results will have a direct impact on future wireless applications, and are valuable from both scientific and economy-enhancement viewpoints.Read moreRead less

A main limiting factor in supplying future broadband communications is overcoming signal dispersion in the transmission channel. Recent preliminary collaboration by the chief investigators has uncovered a novel approach to this problem based on powerful mathematical lattice theory. The techniques have potential to significantly increase bandwidth and reliability compared to current technologies. This project will use lattice theory to propose, develop, analyse and test new data transmission techniques including joint coding, modulation and equalisation. The research will include theoretical analysis and hardware implementation. The overall aim is to dramatically improve reliability and throughput of data communication systems.Read moreRead less
