This is a significant restriction for audio applications in the entertainment, surveillance and virtual/mixed reality areas. The project will research novel and practical solutions to this problem and offers a significant conceptual advance in the transmission of complex audio scenes. This project will build fundamental new technology and IP for Australia in the digital media and audio space, one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy.Read moreRead less
Parametric coding of acoustic fields using models of auditory sensitivity. The project represents cutting edge research in the field of soundfield recording, audio compression and reproduction. The introduction of explicit acoustic field theory to the field of audio compression is a substantive and innovative change that not only furthers the knowledge base in the field but also provides a framework for contributions in related fields such as auditory prosthetics and noise cancellation. The most obvious benefits will be international acclaim and the opportunity to patent, develop and ultimately export technology and systems. Outcomes from the project will benefit consumers and facilitate diverse industries within Australia ranging from health management to the consumer electronics and entertainment industry. Recent studies have shown that significant portions of the licensed spectra are idle most of the time. Cognitive radio is a technology allowing unlicensed devices to use parts of the licensed spectrum not occupied by the licensed devices. In this program we will design communication networks capable of sensing the radio environment and selecting suitable spectral bands for transmission. This program will expand the knowledge of cognitive networks theory by creating new dynamic spectrum access and interference cancellation techniques. The proposed research is significant for improving the radio spectrum usage in Australia and it will have an excellent commercial potential. Read moreRead less

With the current state of the art, a performance at the Sydney Opera House cannot be recorded and broadcast such that you can listen to it as if you are in the best seat of the house. The goal of our project is to develop the ultimate form of multi-channel audio broadcasting to create this experience. We will develop and implement effective systems for recording, broadcasting and playback of 3D audio in three different scenarios: individual headphone reproduction; small loudspeaker array reproduction; and large loudspeaker array reproduction. We will create optimal recording techniques and broadcasting software for each of these playback techniques.Read moreRead less

Locating Interference to GPS: Protecting the World's Aircraft Landing Systems. GRAS is an enormous initiative that is expected to generate billions of dollars in exports for Australia. The equipment developed in this project will protect the system from radio frequency interference. It thus protects these exports, and creates a new exportable product. By protecting this system, it makes air travel safer both in Australia and in the countries that buy this Australian technology.
Coping with Chaos: Towards Efficient and Robust Wireless Networks through Opportunistic Cooperation. There is a tremendous uptake of short-range wireless technologies in consumer products. However, the ever-increasing network densities and uncoordinated deployment of devices compound the chaotic nature of wireless systems. Current technologies do not operate efficiently in high-density networks, degrading the user experience considerably. This research project will produce groundbreaking methods ....Coping with Chaos: Towards Efficient and Robust Wireless Networks through Opportunistic Cooperation. There is a tremendous uptake of short-range wireless technologies in consumer products. However, the ever-increasing network densities and uncoordinated deployment of devices compound the chaotic nature of wireless systems. Current technologies do not operate efficiently in high-density networks, degrading the user experience considerably. This research project will produce groundbreaking methods in network design and operation, where devices actively coordinate their actions for the benefit of all users. There is a huge opportunity for the Australian industry to become a world leader in this fast-growing space, and our work will facilitate new commercial enterprises as well as showcase Australian research in the area.Read moreRead less
Assisted GPS and Advanced Positioning For Emergency Services. Many volunteers have lost their lives fighting bushfires in Australia. Fires are becoming more numerous and more fierce. Some of those firemen could have been saved if better information was available: where they were, where the firefront was and how it was progressing. This project aims to save lives by solving part of this problem: locating and reporting the position of the remote firefighter by making GPS work reliably under trees. ....Assisted GPS and Advanced Positioning For Emergency Services. This will also make search and rescue operations safer and more efficient. The technology can transfer readily into the location-based services market which is set to boom in the next decade. This project helps maintain momentum in Australia's world-class but small positioning industry.Read moreRead less
