The Information and communications technology (ICT) industry has direct contribution to the economy as well as being an enabler across many areas of potential growth. This project aims at solving a key problem currently inhibiting an entire class of wireless ICT applications with strict quality-of-service requirements.
Another important impact is the bridging nature of the project, cutting across traditionally separated disciplines within telecommunications. The cross-layer design methodologies are the first steps towards interdisciplinary work, opening up new areas of research with high potential of innovation. Establishing an R&D niche of excellence will inspire more efforts into these areas, providing a knowledge base for Australia.Read moreRead less
Mathematical modelling of information flow in social networks. This proposal aims to develop new mathematical and statistical methods to understand information flow in social networks. By using novel information theoretic techniques, it will create new methods to characterise social information flow in social networks. These tools will allow derivation of fundamental limits of predictability for AI methods applied to digital data. This proposal aims to develop new mathematical and statistical methods to understand information flow in social networks. By using novel information theoretic techniques, it will create new methods to characterise social information flow in social networks. These tools will allow derivation of fundamental limits of predictability for AI methods applied to digital data. New mathematics of information flow will produce insights into social influence in online social networks. Benefits include: better understanding of how echo chambers may form in social networks, predictive models for how misinformation can spread online such as during an emergency, and a framework for intercomparison of AI methods applied to digital data on individuals. Digital China: From cultural presence to innovative nation. This project aims to investigate how digital platforms and technologies help Chinese culture and ideas reach the world. While China's global cultural presence has increased, it is not seen as an innovative nation. The project examines how the Chinese government’s internet+ strategy changes power dynamics among political institutions, commercially motivated digital companies and online communities. The project will investigate internatio ....Digital China: From cultural presence to innovative nation. The project will investigate internationalisation strategies and consumption of Chinese culture on digital platforms in China, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea. It expects to understand the implications of China's digital ascendency and the lessons for Australia in the post-resources boom era.Read moreRead less
Investigation of the audio spotlight for active noise control. The focus of this project is to investigate a new technology - the audio spotlight - with the aim of developing an active noise control (ANC) system that incorporates the audio spotlight as a control source. The audio spotlight offers the potential to overcome or significantly modify the fundamental physical constraints that limit the performance of ANC systems that use conventional loudspeakers as control sources. Just as audio spot ....Investigation of the audio spotlight for active noise control. The audio spotlight offers the potential to overcome or significantly modify the fundamental physical constraints that limit the performance of ANC systems that use conventional loudspeakers as control sources. Just as audio spotlights may be the most radical technological development in acoustics since the invention of the coil loudspeaker, successful incorporation of an audio spotlight into an active noise control system will revolutionise active noise control.Read moreRead less
Non-linear dynamics of magnetic bearing systems. The aim of this project is to gain a much deeper insight into the effects of non-linearities on the dynamic behavior and on the performance of active magnetic bearings(AMBs). The immediate challenges lie in overcoming poor download speeds and area coverage, as well as expensive access. This research will deliver cost and power-efficient receiver architectures to provide end-user utility, and will train postgraduate researchers across traditional discipline boundaries in mathematics and engineering. The project represents an important contribution to frontier technologies in information and communications technology for building and transforming Australian industries.Read moreRead less
Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. The sub band Signal To Noise Ratio in an OFDM communications channel varies by as much as 30 dB. In order to optimise the bandwidth efficiency of OFDM signalling it is desirable to adapt the chosen modulation technique such as M-ary QAM to the SNR available in sub bands. In this way high quality channels transmit the highest bit rates, whilst low quality channels accommodate the lowest bit rates. The net result is that the capacity of the communications link ....Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. Distortion effects in satellite amplifiers have a serious impact upon communication system performance, for example, by increasing the error rates.
The research study we are proposing involves analysing these distortion causing non linear effects and designing techniques to compensate for them. Although we are initially interested in the nonlinear satellite channel, we intend the results to be extended to other difficult nonlinear channels such as will be present in future 3G and 4G mobile communication systems.
The proposed research will place Australia at the forefront of cutting edge Information Technology and Communications research.
