While information systems with artificial intelligence are increasingly used to support or automate work tasks, this can come at a cost to the development and retention of essential skills in workers. Skill erosion can jeopardise safety and fairness in contexts where humans' skills are needed. This innovative project leverages systems thinking, case studies and action design research to investigate how leveraging artificial intelligence shapes workers' skills. Its expected outcomes include a new systems theory of skill erosion and organisational guidelines for managing artificial intelligence. These can help organisations maximise human potential by striking a balance between relying on automation and maintaining workers' skills. Read moreRead less

This project aims to improve the capacity of Australian businesses to derive value from social media data for innovation in an efficient manner, which is central to improving Australia’s global competitiveness. This will be achieved by developing an open innovation process-based framework for social media, which utilises advanced analytics to unlock the value of social media data and provides the analytics tools required at each stage of the innovation process. The resulting outputs will allow local businesses to transform social media data into actionable insights for each of the three stages of the open innovation process through machine learning and social network analysis algorithms.Read moreRead less
Discontinued Use of Social Media: Dichotomy of Rational & Emotional Choices. This project aims to gain a better understanding of discontinued use of social media. For businesses and governments, social media serves as a dynamic channel for engagement, value co-creation, and business analytics marketing that is lost when users choose to discontinue its use. This project will generate new knowledge of rational and emotional decision criteria, enabling design features of social media, and their com ....Discontinued Use of Social Media: Dichotomy of Rational & Emotional Choices. This project aims to gain a better understanding of discontinued use of social media. For businesses and governments, social media serves as a dynamic channel for engagement, value co-creation, and business analytics marketing that is lost when users choose to discontinue its use. This project will generate new knowledge of rational and emotional decision criteria, enabling design features of social media, and their complex effects on discontinued use of social media. The expected outcome of this project is an integrated theory of social media discontinuance. The project findings provide significant benefits, such as strategic capabilities and actionable knowledge for businesses and governments to mitigate social media discontinued use.Read moreRead less

The aim of the project is to generate theoretical knowledge on how to govern agile teams effectively. Effective governance of software development projects is essential for companies to protect their information technology investments. Nowadays, companies have migrated to agile software development where requirements and solutions evolve iteratively and change frequently; yet formal approaches to governance (eg steering committee and detailed plans) are ineffective and impede flexibility, agility and creativity. This project aims to identify informal governance approaches for agile projects based on team embeddedness and network theory. With this knowledge, management could ensure projects deliver value at an acceptable cost, quality and timescale.Read moreRead less
Examining multi-level Information Technology (IT) project alignment in government services: the case of contracted employment services. Improved Information Technology (IT) alignment is essential for the delivery of government services within a complex public-private, inter-organisational environment. This project will investigate the extent to which well-aligned IT support systems contribute positively to the efficient and effective delivery of contracted employment services.
Resolving the Alignment Issue between Business and Information Technology in Organizations. How to align a firm’s IT resources with its business needs attracts much attention in organisations, and hence in IS research. To date, however, work in this area has been principally atheoretic, and sometimes inconsistent. This project seeks to resolve theoretical inconsistencies to provide an internally consistent explanation on how to achieve alignment, and thereby improve business performance. This project advances knowledge by engaging in: the first multi-theoretic study of how IT alignment evolves; the first comparison of institutional theory, punctuated equilibrium theory, and complexity theory; and the first study that combines a dual-case methodology with simulations in IS research.Read moreRead less

Preventing railway suicide: An open-systems perspective. This project aims to develop an automated suicide risk detection system to reduce the incidence and impact of railway suicide, which has a devastating effect on victims’ families, station staff, train drivers, emergency workers, and bystanders. This project will use open-systems theory to develop two complementary information systems for more effective detection and reporting of suicide risk; use these systems to investigate how different situational factors interact with different combinations of service interventions to influence suicide risk; and share the findings to reduce railway suicide in Australia and overseas.Read moreRead less
A theory of communicative practices within financial internet discussion site communities. This project aims to use online financial investment communities to identify factors that drive communication and influence knowledge co-creation, examine how systematic variations in these factors influence investor decision making, and develop a mid-range theory for explaining and predicting the influence of online communication patterns on individual decisions and market outcomes. By developing and vali ....A theory of communicative practices within financial internet discussion site communities. This project aims to use online financial investment communities to identify factors that drive communication and influence knowledge co-creation, examine how systematic variations in these factors influence investor decision making, and develop a mid-range theory for explaining and predicting the influence of online communication patterns on individual decisions and market outcomes. By developing and validating a new mid-range theory, initially in the financial investment context, this project will provide significant benefits, such as help to secure Australia’s place in a changing world through improved information flow.Read moreRead less
Rapidly Locating Items in Distribution Networks with Process-Driven Nodes. Safety-critical product recalls are a major public health issue in Australia. Recent extortion attempts involving poisoning of chocolate bars, paracetamol tablets and biscuits have demonstrated the urgent need for improved ways of locating commercial products that have been released into the community. Existing product recall tools are effective only within regulated manufacturing and warehousing facilities. This project ....Rapidly Locating Items in Distribution Networks with Process-Driven Nodes. This project will develop novel techniques for locating items in large-scale distribution networks driven by complex logistic processes. The outcomes of the project will make it easier to rapidly and accurately pinpoint product locations outside controlled facilities, thus contributing to both cost savings and public safety.Read moreRead less

Business process modelling is a key tool for organisations striving to create efficiencies by leveraging their IT infrastructure. This project will develop techniques for increasing the productivity of business process analysts by allowing them to reuse as much as possible existing models rather than systematically desigining new ones from scratch. Specifically, the project will develop and validate a language for designing highly configurable process models. This language will enable superior approaches to business process modelling and hence smarter use of information. This will place Australia at the forefront of developments in business process management: a crucial technology in today's global, dynamic and heterogeneous environments.Read moreRead less
