Summary
Until now, determining an overlapping genetic aetiology between disorders, required large study cohorts of family records. Here we will use genome-wide genotypes available on independent case-control samples to estimate a shared genetic aetiology directly from the molecular data. In this way we will explore previously intractable questions, such as the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis in people with schizophrenia, a well-recognised epidemiological puzzle.

Summary
Myocardial infarction occurring in the context of another concurrent illness is associated with a higher morbidity, and mortality than patients presenting with spontaneous myocardial infarction. Significant variation in the use of coronary angiography for the investigation of these patients exists, and currently no trial evidence or guidelines define best practice. This trial will establish the optimal investigation and treatment approaches for the care of this very common clinical condition.

Summary
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the main cause of death from alcohol consumption. Early detection of the disease and subsequent abstinence from alcohol can prevent death and disability. Current medications to help control alcohol consumption are not suitable for use in this patient population owing to the risk of liver side-effects. This study investigates the novel use of an existing medication, baclofen, to safely help maintain abstinence from alcohol in patients suffering from ALD.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that is the 4th leading cause of death worldwide. There is currently no effective therapy to treat people with COPD, which costs the Australian community over $8.8 billion/year. Much of the disease burden and health care costs in COPD is associated with the management of its comorbidities (i.e other chronic medical conditions such as heart disease). This project will develop novel therapies to treat COPD and its comorbidities.

Summary
We propose to study the patterns of care of Indigenous people with cancer at the primary health care (PHC) setting. Working collaboratively with PHC centres, we will examine what systems or processes are in place to identify such patients in the PHC centres, and make recommendations for improvements. Our primary focus is identifying factors that are modifiable, particularly those related to follow up/communication between the tertiary and the PHC systems, and management of comorbidities.

Summary
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common but serious sleep disorder. Continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) therapy can be very effective in treating OSA. We have found that many patients with OSA also suffer from insomnia, and this can make it hard for them to begin CPAP therapy and hard for them to stick to it. This trial will examine the effect of treating insomnia concurrently with CPAP, with the expectation that overall treatment outcomes will improve.
