Optimising Computerised Decision Support To Transform Medication Safety And Reduce Prescriber Burden
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$325,546.00
Summary
As medication management in Australian hospitals shifts from paper to electronic formats, organisations are faced with a difficult decision: should drug-drug interaction (DDI) alerts be turned on and if so, which alerts? In this study, we propose a highly innovative approach to assess DDI alerts, which combines a robust evaluation of error rates with a human factors evaluation of alerts.
Improving Global Tuberculosis Control With The AuTuMN Platform
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$655,059.00
Summary
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading infectious killer, with the failure of global control responsible for the vast majority of Australia’s cases. Using our robustly developed software platform, we have performed several country-level studies to predict the future burden of disease and compare the impact of alternative responses to controlling the epidemic. In this project, we will extend our platform to perform simulations at the global level and answer key questions in TB control.

In this project, Macquarie University will collaborate with UTS and SilverQuest to develop an innovative safety-preserving ecosystem for autonomous driving. This system will not only be adopted by SilverQuest’s customers (automotive companies) to secure their latest autonomous driving models, but also be commercialised as a toolset that can be plugged into existing autonomous vehicles to detect and prevent malicious attacks on autonomous driving models. The project will lead to two innovations: in theory design an attack detection and prevention ecosystem for autonomous driving and in application implement a safety analysis toolset for industry-scale autonomous systems.Read moreRead less

This project investigates the iterative use of data mining results to allow experts to construct feedback to influence subsequent production work. We explore the problem in the context of General Practice medicine by having General Practitioners (GPs) review emerging patterns from their own practice's electronic medical records and author feedback to discourage undesirable patterns. The work will have immediate applicability to medical practice and will drive innovation in data mining method, notably for efficient identification of temporal and complex niche patterns. More broadly, the work will extend the way data mining is used to create new expectations of workstation behaviour.Read moreRead less
Computerised Surveillance Of Invasive Fungal Infections In Hospitals Using Existing Hospital Information Systems
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$123,453.00
Summary
Patients undergoing organ transplants or chemotherapy for cancer are susceptible to infections caused by fungi. Hospital outbreaks of fungal infections related to construction have occurred. Monitoring of these infections is required due to their considerable heath and economic costs. We aim to build a computerised system allowing for the real-time identification of fungal infections, leading to improved outcomes for patients, early recognition of hospital outbreaks and cost-savings.
Hear Assure: Saving Natural Hearing During Cochlear Implantation
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,058,537.00
Summary
Cochlear implants provide hearing by electrical stimulation of the hearing nerve. Even people receiving cochlear implants may have natural hearing, which is lost in up to 70% of patients through trauma caused during implantation. This is a major barrier to the adoption of cochlear implants. To overcome this, we will deliver Hear Assure, our novel hearing-monitoring product that is integrated with the cochlear implant, enabling safe positioning of the implant to minimise loss of natural hearing.
Accessible Data Exploration and Analysis for Blind People. This project aims to develop new assistive technologies that will enable blind people to explore and analyse data more readily. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the fields of assistive technology, multimodal interfaces, dialogue systems and natural language understanding and generation. This project aims to develop new assistive technologies that will enable blind people to explore and analyse data more readily. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the fields of assistive technology, multimodal interfaces, dialogue systems and natural language understanding and generation. The expected outcome of the project is an innovative conversational agent that uses a mix of speech and tactile graphics to communicate with a blind user and proactively assists with data analysis tasks. This should provide significant benefits, as it will overcome barriers to data analysis and exploration by blind people that currently restrict access to government, health and personal data, and limit employment opportunities.Read moreRead less
Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal death and cerebral palsy. This grant will provide proof-of-concept that a computer program can be developed to predict a pregnant womans risk of preterm birth. There is a large market (4M US and 8M Europe), there are no competing technologies. This is a unique collaboration between Biomedical Engineering and an Australian centre with an international reputation in preterm birth, assisted by a pathology company.
Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. This project aims to deliver a framework and a suite of approaches for cost-effective app service management in the edge computing (EC) environment facilitated by the 5G mobile network. Edge computing offers great promises for rapidly advancing mobile and IoT apps in many active domains in Australia, e.g., self-driving cars, medical services, etc. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks ....Cost-effective App Service Management in Edge Computing Environment. Using a variety of optimization techniques and game theory, this project attacks the new challenges in the deployment, delivery and adaptation of app services in the EC environment. The outcomes of this project will significantly promote new mobile and IoT apps over Australia's 5G mobile network by allowing app vendors to manage their services cost-effectively with ease in the EC environment.Read moreRead less
