Precision three-dimensional localization system for underground mining vehicles, offering improved productivity and personnel safety. The advanced machine guidance and monitoring technology developed by this project will significantly enhance the partner organisation's capacity as a leading supplier of mining machine control systems. The deployment of such enhanced machine control systems will offer an immediate national benefit to the Australian Mining Industry by dramatically improving productivity and occupational safety. The national interest will also be served by this project's significant contribution to Australia's leadership position as an innovator in frontier technologies for mining and robotics. Furthermore, the research outcomes will help to solve similar positioning problems in hazardous, GPS-denied environments such as urban search and rescue.

The aim of this proposal is to obtain funding to upgrade major equipment items in the centralised Electron Microscope / X-Ray Unit to replace obsolete instruments, some of which are twenty two years old. The proposed equipment will support highly productive research groups and individuals from the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mechanical Engineering and Medical Sciences. It will be of great assistance in projects as diverse as the development of new ceramic materials, waste water precipitation chemistry, ore deposit geology, increasing agricultural productivity and the ultrastructure of organs responsible for the sense of balance.

Automated On-Line Analysis and Contaminant Detection in Mineral Ore Processing. On-belt analysis is a key to efficient functioning of several industries involved in the mining and use of minerals. It provides chemical analysis of the minerals as they run through the instrument on a conveyer belt. It permits quality control and detection of impurities. The Scantech on-line analyser is at the forefront of this technology. Our aim is to produce novel techniques to significantly improve and make more efficient the processing of data from the analyser. A particular focus will be quicker and improved calibration of the instrument. These techniques will increase the accuracy and speed while reducing the costs of such analysers, thus retaining and enhancing their competitiveness in the global market.
