Driven by four key nodes across the country, the Initiative aims to bring together geographically and financially separated groups into a critical mass of cell and tissue engineering research. This new and rapidly-growing field uses a bio-synthetic approach to replace, repair or regenerate damaged tissues and organs. The Initiative will build the framework which will enable the Network to: identify appropriate expertise, manage duplication, enhance communication, bring together innovative skill sets, create linkages, generate focussed research programs and foster novel commercial opportunities. Ultimately the Initiative and Network will deliver an improved quality of life, reduced healthcare costs, and increased productivity to Australia.Read moreRead less
Sequence to Sequence: Rigorous Statistical and Mathematical Analysis of Biological Sequence Data. Comparative genomics is fundamental for developing an understanding of genes and their function. For example, using statistical and computational techniques, it was recently demonstrated that 60% of genes are conserved between fly and human. Comparative genomics is fundamental for developing an understanding of genes and their function. For example, using statistical and computational techniques, it was recently demonstrated that 60% of genes are conserved between fly and human. When the human gene that confers susceptibility to Parkinson's disease was transferred into the fly it caused symptoms similar to those seen in humans. The future development of 'personalized medicine' will rely upon understanding the function of human genes, as will progress in the agricultural sector. Rigorous statistical analysis and development of appropriate bioinformatic methods are crucial to biological sequence analysis in comparative genomics.Read moreRead less

Analysis of trace concentrations of contaminants in food, water and biota is essential for proper environmental and human health protection, and the ability to analyse different isotopes of nutrients will improve our capability to develop techniques to fortify foods with essential micronutrients. The instrumentation will also assist our understanding of the geological processes, climate and environmental change and the formation and location of mineral deposits having economic potential in Australia. By improving forensic identification techniques, the instrumentation will allow identification and tracking of environmental contamination of the food chain and water supplies, and to identify and track criminal and terrorist activity. An evaluation of novel aluminosilicate materials based on modified kaolins for environmental applications. We have shown that simple and inexpensive modification of kaolin produces materials that adsorb large amounts of ammonium (N) and phosphate (P). We intend to evaluate and develop these materials for water treatment, so as to reduce N, P inputs into rivers and wetlands. The materials can then be used as fertilisers. We intend to evaluate and develop these materials for water treatment, so as to reduce N, P inputs into rivers and wetlands. The materials can then be used as fertilisers. Similarly addition of the materials to sandy soils to reduce leaching losses of N, P from fertilisers will be investigated. The major outcome of this research will be effective and inexpensive procedures for reducing eutrophication due to N, P from waste water and fertilisers.Read moreRead less

This project on Indigenous use of the internet aims to identify the reasons why Indigenous Australians are 69% less likely to access the Internet than their non-Indigenous counterparts as demonstrated in the last census. This research will assist in innovative policy development including the creation of a culturally-sensitive model to assist Indigenous communities to raise their use of computers and the internet. Ultimately the aim of the research is to provide mechanisms to engage Indigenous people with current technology to advance health, education and housing outcomes in their communities. This project aims to strengthen the tradition of Australian metaphysics, by studying fundamentality, or the notion of being fundamental. Australia is a world leader in metaphysical research. This project aims to strengthen the tradition of Australian metaphysics, by studying fundamentality, or the notion of being fundamental. It revives the classical monistic worldview on which we are interdependent and interrelated fragments of a greater whole. It thus connects the philosophical tradition of Plotinus, Spinoza, and Hegel to the physical picture of the cosmos as a single entangled quantum system, and so promises to deepen our understanding of our place in nature—while strengthening Australian leadership in the field.Read moreRead less
