Summary
In heart failure there is a large increase in sympathetic nerve activity to the heart that leads to damage to the heart and sudden death. We have shown that lesion of the area postrema, a brain nucleus that senses hormones in the blood, reduces nerve activity to the heart and, importantly, improves cardiac function. We aim to translate these findings into a treatment that can be used clinically, which our findings compellingly indicate should improve cardiac function in heart failure
Computational MultiPhysics Analysis of 3D Structural Damage and Failure. This project aims to develop advanced modelling techniques to assess quantitatively, the impacts of environmental changes caused by climate on structures. New and existing structures need to be climate-resilient to sustain more frequent and hazardous climatic actions. The growing ageing population is an increasing socioeconomic burden. The central nervous system is particularly susceptible to ageing, which is difficult to measure at its onset. Critically, as the eye is an easily accessible extension of the cortex, retinal imaging may be a non-invasive surrogate to assess ageing changes in the brain. Coping with temperature extremes: morphological constraints on leaf function in a warmer, drier climate. This project will determine how hydraulic properties of temperate, evergreen leaves affect their capacity to cope with seasonal variation in temperature extremes. The results will enhance mechanistic understanding of temperature tolerance, and inform prediction of vegetation change in response to climate warming and increasing CO2 concentrations.
Participation in the administration of justice: deaf citizens as jurors. This project will pioneer international research on legal signed language interpreting and jury service; the results are likely to innovate law reform. The expected outcome will be to overturn previously held common law that deaf people cannot serve as jurors due to having an interpreter as the 13th person in the jury room as well as confidentiality issues.
Copper complexes for the diagnostic imaging of Alzheimer's disease. This research will develop new chemistry to produce new imaging agents for earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
Novel anti-ageing peptides in the vascular system.
