This project aims to examine how the Australian labour market has adjusted over the past 30 years to several major developments: increased use of computers, growth in international trade and the mining boom, microeconomic reform, and the expansion of higher education. The analysis is designed to encompass the effect on labour market outcomes including workers’ pay, the skill composition of employment, migration flows and individuals’ decisions about acquiring education. Having a richer understanding of how the labour market has adjusted in the past may help policy-makers to infer how adjustment will happen in the future. For example, a better understanding of the effects of new technologies would provide a stronger basis for judging trends in job creation and hence the types of skills and training that will be required in Australia in future years.Read moreRead less

Australia needs a pension reform to promote longer working lives of mature people in a health- and productivity-enhancing way, that is also financially sustainable. This study uses cutting-edge methodology and data to analyse decisions surrounding how mature people disengage from employment towards their eventual permanent retirement, and how these decisions relate to their health and well-being. It compares and contrasts Australia with the UK, Germany and the US to derive lessons for developing evidence-based pension reform. International comparative research enables the identification of important policy, institutional and/or cultural differences and lessons that may well be missed by single country studies.Read moreRead less

This project will provide new evidence on the determinants and dynamics of mental health and wellbeing using a range of survey data that tracks individuals for up to 50 years, as well as real-time information from internet search data. Mental health problems often start early in life and reoccur throughout adulthood, which makes a better understanding of the relationship between childhood socioeconomic conditions and mental health outcomes throughout the life-course important for designing policies aimed at early prevention, and therefore reducing socioeconomic inequalities.Read moreRead less
Agglomeration of Economic Activity in a Developing Country Context. This project examines the geographical concentration of manufacturing by exploiting unusually detailed Indonesian firm-level data. The analysis is based on a new rich body of theory which explicitly takes account of the spatial linkages and transport costs between firms and their markets. Indonesia's high internal transport costs -arising from its geography and poor internal transport system - make it an interesting case study. ....Agglomeration of Economic Activity in a Developing Country Context. Further, the importance of regional development to the country's political stability make deconcentration of industry a vital policy issue. An understanding of the agglomeration process is essential to the development of effective policies aimed at stimulating under-developed regions.Read moreRead less
