Summary
Disorders affecting skeletal muscle and the heart can have life threatening effects and lead to impaired mobility and sudden cardiac death. This project will uncover the mechanisms of disorders which lead to skeletal muscle fatigue, chemotherapy induced toxicity in the heart and heart failure. Understanding these mechanisms may lead to successful gene therapy treatment and to the design of a new range of drug therapies to treat these devastating disorders.

This study focuses on age-related decline in cognitive function in midlife.Early detection of people at risk will allow the introduction of health programs to reduce disease.This study would provide essential information on the role of hormones and vascular risk factors in cognitive decline.This information will fill a significant gap in our knowledge on the role of hormones and vascular factors and open a potential avenue of treatment to improve cognitive outcomes in ageing.
The human genome project was a major advance, allowing for molecular foothold towards an understanding of human diseases. The question now is “what do these genes do, and how do they participate in human disease?” In my lab we are focused on this issue. With an exceptional research standing internationally, and as the leader of a Cardiovascular Bioengineering team, I am developing a new method for assessing central blood pressure in children that will provide better information about early risk of cardiovascular disease than arm blood pressure. This will be applied (1) in a large health study of Australian children and (2) to identify risks and causes of adult-type cardiovascular disease in children with repaired congenital heart disease.
