Computational Molecular Science (CMS) involves the use of theory and computational methods to simulate and visualise molecular systems ranging from small atmospheric species to proteins, nucleic acids, chemical polymers and materials. It represents our most incisive expression of what we understand about the molecular basis of nature. The CMS network will integrate and cross-fertilize both fundamental and application-based expertize in molecular scale computations in the fields of nanoscience, biomaterials, biotechnology, biomedical science and environmental science. It will uncover and explore critical new interdisciplinary science and create new molecular-based paradigms that will drive advances in these fields over the next decade.Read moreRead less
Unique Chemistry from Radioactive Decay in the Solid-State. Australia is an important member of the international nuclear fuel cycle. It holds one-third of the world's uranium reserves and is a major player in the development of technology for immobilizing radioactive waste. We will use computer simulation to answer a very important question which is extremely difficult to study experimentally: How does radioactive decay inside a solid change the chemistry of the material over time? Not only will our study improve nuclear waste storage, it will also reveal how in-situ chemical change creates new kinds of solids which cannot be made by conventional means. These solids can exhibit unusual and useful behaviour; this project provides the first investigation of this unexplored technological niche.Read moreRead less

Facilities for spectroscopy and diffraction at high pressures. The provision of infrastructure for the study of novel materials under high pressures will enhance Australia's capability in creating new materials and in creating new devices that meet needs in communication, environment and medicine applications. The new facility will enable researchers to understand the response of structures to extreme pressures and will exploit the unique capabilities of the synchrotron light.
Materials World Network for the Study of Macromolecular Ferrofluids. This work will develop an understanding that will allow us to optimise the properties of ferrofluids (magnetic liquids) to suit particular applications. Although the primary application that will be investigated is the treatment of retinal detachment, the results will be applicable to a wide range of applications including ferrofluid-based actuators, electromagnetic micropumps and fluid based valves and sealing systems. Although the primary application that will be investigated is the treatment of retinal detachment, the results will be applicable to a wide range of applications including ferrofluid-based actuators, electromagnetic micropumps and fluid based valves and sealing systems. During the course of this work, young Australian scientists will be trained in a cross-disciplinary environment in a variety of aspects of both nano- and bio- technology that are a key part of the National Research Priority: Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries.Read moreRead less

The proposed project is designed to enable one of the most exciting and least studied components of the gravitational wave spectrum, the Astrophysical Gravitational wave Background (AGB), to be detected by Advanced LIGO. It will extend the Australia-US collaboration in Advanced LIGO to include modeling, simulation and detection methods of the AGB and the study of the optical noise in LIGO and Advanced LIGO type systems. In particular we plan to search for anomalous noise sources and, especially those arising in high optical power cavities that could limit detection of the AGB.Read moreRead less
International partnership in robotic astronomy and gravitational wave data analysis using a supercomputer. The project is aimed at providing student participation in frontier research using robotic astronomy and novel data analysis methods. It will focus on the study of the most violent explosions in the Universe - cosmological gamma ray bursts. These cataclysmic events possibly herald the formation of the most exotic objects in the Universe - black holes.
