Nilpotent associative algebras and spherical hypersurfaces. This project concerns pure basic research in mathematics and is based on an important recently discovered relationship between certain geometric and algebraic objects. In the project, this relationship will be applied in a novel way to solve several significant long-standing problems in the research area of complex geometry.
The Reconstruction and Recognition Problems for Hypersurface Singularities. This project concerns pure basic research in mathematics. It is centred around a surprising relationship between geometric objects called quasi-homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, and algebraic structures described as Artinian Gorenstein algebras. This relationship has not been fully understood despite numerous attempts by internationally based experts to shed light on it. It is centred around a surprising relationship between geometric objects called quasi-homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, and algebraic structures described as Artinian Gorenstein algebras. This relationship has not been fully understood despite numerous attempts by internationally based experts to shed light on it. Armed with a novel approach to Artinian Gorenstein algebras, this project proposes to clarify the nature of this relationship and utilise it for solving related geometric and algebraic problems. In particular, it aims at obtaining a groundbreaking result in the area of classical invariant theory.Read moreRead less

Symmetry and geometric structures. This is a fundamental research project in mathematics, especially concerned with the interaction between symmetry, differential equations, and geometry. Based on many classical and recently discovered instances, the aim of the project is to use symmetries to build and understand curved geometric structures from their flat counterparts.
Improving neuronal cell function with cell permeable copper complexes. Metal-based drugs offer an exciting new approach to treatment of neurodegeneration. However, little is known about how cells metabolise these drugs and this information is critical for further drug development. This project will determine how metal-based drugs are metabolised by neuronal cells and how this may result in therapeutic benefit.
Electrical properties of human dendrites. This project aims to determine the electrical properties of dendrites in human neurons. Dendrites are the primary site of synaptic input to neurons and their electrical properties play a key role in information processing in the brain. While we know much about the electrical properties of dendrites in other species, primarily rodents, little is known about the electrical properties of human dendrites. Dendrites are the primary site of synaptic input to neurons and their electrical properties play a key role in information processing in the brain. While we know much about the electrical properties of dendrites in other species, primarily rodents, little is known about the electrical properties of human dendrites. This project aims to address this gap in knowledge for the first time. The results obtained will shed light on the mechanisms the brain uses to process information, and therefore will bring us a step closer to truly understanding ourselves.Read moreRead less

In the mammalian brain, the principal brain region performing this function is the superior colliculus. Despite its importance, little is known about the role the superior colliculus plays in sensory perception. This project addresses this issue by leveraging revolutionary new recording techniques to determine how the superior colliculus codes sensory information and ultimately drives behaviour. The outcomes will be of immediate benefit to scientists studying sensory processing and perceptual decision making, and will help keep Australia at the forefront of brain-inspired engineering and the neuroscience-based knowledge economy.Read moreRead less

This project aims to understand how electrical activity in the primary olfactory (piriform) cortex enables mice to recognise and remember odours. By using optical recording techniques together with genetic tools, the project expects to generate new knowledge about how the mammalian brain builds internal representations of the external world. Specific outcomes of the project include new insights into the functional architecture of the piriform cortex and fresh understanding of how olfactory information is encoded and stored in neural circuits. More broadly, the project aims to advance our understanding of how the brain works, with benefits for future improvements in artificial intelligence and brain-machine interfaces.Read moreRead less

This proposal aims at sustainable improvements in plant productivity and photosynthetic adaptation in drastic Australian climates. In photosynthesis, membranes with the four multiprotein complexes use sunlight to make compounds that drive carbon assimilation. Instead of the usual dissection of photosynthetic membranes, this project will develop and refine the applicant's rapid, reliable, non-intrusive techniques to probe the four membrane complexes at work in their native state in leaves. Two portable commercial instruments will potentially emerge from the techniques. This novel non-reductionist approach will identify key limitations to photosynthetic performance under stress, and insights into improvements for primary plant productivity.Read moreRead less
