Development of a digital transmission electron microscope facility: Transmission electron microscopy is a fundamental tool for the study of biological systems at the ultrastructural level. This project will establish a facility that will be accessible to a range of biological researchers, replacing aged and non-sustainable electron microscopy facilities. The instrument will revitalise cellular research and provide additional insights and outcomes related to the study of intracellular features in a diverse range of systems and models. This will add substantially to the knowledge base across a wide range of fields of research, increasing national contributions in the areas of neuroscience, separation science and marine science.

From The Synchrotron To The Clinic: Translation Of A Novel Functional Lung Imaging Technology

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $891,834.00
    Summary
Our team has recently developed a synchrotron technology with a startling capacity for dynamic functional imaging that can act as a sensitive regional indicator of lung disease. We will demonstrate that this technology can be translated from the synchrotron to the lab and eventually the clinic. We will provide proof of this concept by the application of this technology to emphysema, asthma, lung cancer, cystic fibrosis lung disease and neonatal resuscitation.

ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure. EII targets consolidated research towards the comprehensive development & establishment of advanced information infrastructures. Its prime purpose is to provide a forum for intellectual exchange by diverse yet complementary research groups, to address the fundamental research problems faced by scientific & business communities when dealing with deployment of information technology to globally distributed, and data intensive environments. EII will address 3 tightly coupled research themes: Ability to interoperate across existing heterogenous platforms & applications; Efficient processing of very large data sets; Technology adoption & impact. Generic results will be applicable to e-science and large business information systems installations.

Improving the forecasts of ecosystem shifts must be a key focus of future ecological research if we are to preserve our unique Australian landscapes. Our proposal is of clear benefit to Australia because of the urgent need for integrated methods to predict the cumulative impact of shifts in climate and land use. We will also contribute innovative tools involving genetic and image analysis, and state-of-the-art modelling. The damage modern human societies are inflicting on global environments has led to a great demand for logistically feasible and cost-effective ways to prevent biodiversity loss.
