Disinfectant management and disinfection by-products are of concern to water utilities, water treatment researchers and consumers worldwide. The project will make a world-class contribution to these issues, through use of state-of-the-art equipment and developed technologies. Sophisticated characterization of disinfection by-product precursors, especially poorly defined less volatile species, will provide insights into the relationship between their chemical structures and behaviour in treatment processes, benefiting all water utilities. The project will inform new drinking water guidelines and assist water utilities to balance the competing requirements of maintaining effective pathogen barriers versus disinfection by-product control.Read moreRead less

Whilst Australia is arguably the most reliable supplier of premium raw sugar the implementation of improved processing technologies by rivals has (and without appropriate research strategies will continue to) eroded some of the long-held Australian advantages.
Our innovative approaches will improve raw sugar quality, measurement methods, and allow new product development (value adding), enabling Australia to maintain its? world leading position. Importantly, our technologies enable improvements of specific quality issues (and potentially as yet unidentified issues), further differentiating the Australian product in the international marketplace.

Partner, Dow has links with researchers around the world, and this project will allow Australian researchers to access the network of Dow laboratories and projects and develop a long-term relationship. The analysis methods to be developed will focus on metabolite profiling which has relevance to a broad range of biological monitoring activities from human health, to plant genetics and breeding. New generation polymer materials will be characterised by using the new techniques developed. The methods will be platform technologies for future studies eg. anti-terrorism bio- and chemo-monitoring.Read moreRead less

This project aims to evaluate and validate broad capabilities of advanced chemical profiling using benchtop and portable gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for forensic applications. Establishing guidelines for sampling various matrices, key performance measures, and improving chemical and residue identification for drug profiling in clandestine laboratories and public venues, chemical warfare agents, and chemical toxins is expected. Anticipated outcomes for project partners in defence and policing include detailed knowledge of sample and residue composition and on-site assessment of chemical risks with immediate feedback. Benefits should include improved community and security services safety by enhanced detection of harmful substances.Read moreRead less

The project promotes Australia as a leader in water reuse technology and is of benefit to reuse schemes globally. Several major reuse schemes are planned for Australia and it is well recognised that robust science is needed for public confidence. Community perception is a serious barrier to potable reuse and the results from this project will provide essential and independent information for informed decision making. The oxidation processes proposed will improve the quality of both recycled water and waste brine, providing environmental and economic benefit. This is particularly significant for regional Australia, where there is substantial demand for both water reuse and cost-effective waste disposal in the absence of ocean discharge.Read moreRead less

There is an increasing demand within law enforcement agencies, worldwide, for selective and sensitive methods for the determination of illicit substances. Over the last decade Deakin University chemists have played a major role in establishing the utility of chemiluminescent reactions for the determination of a variety of pharmaceutical opiates in process streams. This project seeks to build upon these successes, in order to develop innovative analytical strategies for forensic detection of certain illicit drugs and explosives. The results of this research have the potential to revolutionise key aspects of forensic analysis.Read moreRead less
Identification and isolation of new pharmaceutical opiate analogues: today's problems tomorrow's solutions. This project will identify and characterise the impurity profiles across opiate alkaloid production, which will enhance the development of manufacturing processes through the reduction of problem impurities and provide potential new drug substances from the isolation of other opiate derived concomitant species.
Oxidation product generation during heating and storage of bio-fuels and alternative fuels assessed by multidimensional gas chromatography. Renewable bio-fuels offer much promise as a replacement for fossil fuels. However, they have a tendency to oxidise when prepared and used, potentially forming gums and solid deposits in engines. The objective of this project is the identification of these deposits and subsequent prevention during engine operation.
Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) flavoromics for distinctive beer. Hop is the spice of beer, as it provides unique flavour chemicals imparting taste (bitterness) and aroma. The flavour potential of hop has not been fully explored, and the genetic basis of hop chemistry is poorly understood. This project aims to gather flavoromic data through modern analytical chemistry, genomics, molecular genetics and brewing in order to better understand the genetic basis of hop chemistry which affects the entire value chain: from hop farm to consumers' experience of beer. The overarching aim of this project is to offer smart breeding strategies leading to novel flavours (taste and aroma) for existing and emerging breweries.Read moreRead less
