Summary
Sleep is significant for young children’s health and development and impacts on family functioning. Increasingly childcare is part of the young child’s sleep environment. This study focuses on the role of childcare in supporting sleep health and identifying sleep, and associated behavioural problems, in the early years of life. The study responds to the policy, practice and legislative demand for evidence to guide appropriate provision for sleep and rest in the childcare context.

Summary
It is well recognised that child health and development has consequences for health later in adulthood. However, despite the fact that billions of dollars are being spent on early childhood initiatives, we do not have a fit-for-purpose tool to measure the effectiveness and impact of interventions, particularly in marginalised and poor communities.This project seeks to trial a new instrument within existing large scale impact evaluations of early childhood programs in China, Tonga and Australia.

Children who live in more deprived family circumstances are more likely to experience poorer health including asthma, obesity, and difficulties in language, learning and behaviour. This research uses large scale population surveys of Australian children to investigate how difficulties such as experiencing poverty may affect childrenÍs health. This research also investigates how families and communities experience barriers to receiving health services and how this affects childrenÍs health.

Summary
Creating healthy social environments is essential to preventing mental illness. Child care is a work and care environment that is likely to influence providers’ and children’s mental health. This project uses national surveys and interviews with providers and child care services to understand how child care work environments impact on the mental health of children and providers. This knowledge will inform organisational and government changes to support good mental health in child care.
Alcohol causes more harm to others, including families and children, than tobacco and other drugs. Alcohol’s harm to others (AHTO) costs Australia around $20 billion per year and the WHO has prioritised AHTO in its 2011 Global Strategy to Reduce Harmful Use of Alcohol. This ECF will enable international, national and local research studies that aim to: improve knowledge of alcohol-related harm to children (ARHC) - analysing survey and official data; and inform alcohol policy in reducing ARHC.

This is possibly because asthma is not just one condition, but multiple conditions, each with separate risk factors. Many children experience mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, causing emotional pain for families and a huge economic cost for society. I aim to prevent these problems before they start. By identifying influences in a pregnant woman’s environment that might lead to mental health problems in her child, such as stress, fertility problems and environmental dangers, we can target these influences early and build positive mental health for children right from the very start of life.
