Enhancing the ability of schools to respond to students with diverse needs has been shown to reduce student disengagement and early leaving. This research will identify ways to achieve this important goal, while reducing incentives for schools to label and segregate students who experience difficulty in schools and with learning. This will have long term benefits not only for individual students, but for communities and for the nation as a whole. The project will contribute to the Commonwealth government's national agenda linking positive educational outcomes to successful employment, broader economic participation, and enhanced social inclusion.Read moreRead less

Investigations of body image will be used as a vehicle to integrate academic teaching, promoting good health and well-being within a social values framework to develop citizenship and social awareness with scientific skills. The organisation of agri-food industries is having a major impact upon firms and individuals along the supply chain, including the sustainability of on-farm production. Australia will benefit greatly if foods being produced are from environmentally sound production and distribution systems: current evidence suggests sustainability is not being achieved. The emerging self-regulatory system for supermarkets may also militate against environmental security and food safety. Finally, supermarket practices have a profound influence over consumer diet and health. In exploring issues of power, food safety regulation, and diet, the research will contribute to a healthier system of food production and consumption in Australia. Read moreRead less

Philanthropic involvement in schooling is prevalent, yet there is no academic research that investigates the substantive consequences of this development in Australian public schooling. The aim of this project is to develop new knowledge in education sociology of how philanthropy is influencing practices of school governance and contributing to systemic inequity within the public school system. The project seeks to build the capacity of education stakeholders to critically evaluate public school privatisation. Further, it hopes to inform sociological theories of what post-Welfare democracies are, and what the state's role ought to be in the public provision of schooling, particularly in relation to equitable school funding arrangements.Read moreRead less

The triple bottom line of social, economic and environmental imperatives forms the accepted ingredients of sustainability. While the economic and environmental dimensions have been relatively well researched, there is insufficient understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions and how these determine environmental and health outcomes. The interactions between the dimensions are also poorly understood. While there are some researchers in this field, they have tended to work in isolation. The development of a resourced interdisciplinary network to facilitate collaboration will increase the contribution and innovativeness of their collective research and contribute to understanding socio-economic determinants of dynamic regions and healthy rural communities.Read moreRead less

This project aims to push the cancer care sector toward person-centred care rather than simply ‘accommodating cultural diversity’. Cancer is much more than just the leading burden of disease in Australia; it is a social and cultural entity, experienced in hugely varied ways within and across communities, subtly reflecting individual histories and cultural biographies. This project will use oral life history and visual methods to understand the interplay of migrants' cultural biographies, their experiences of cancer, and the care they receive. Anticipated outcomes are improved care for migrants living with cancer, person-centred care, and inclusive policy strategies and guides for practice.Read moreRead less

Social capital comprises features of social organisation such as civic participation, norms of reciprocity and trust in others that facilitate cooperation for mutual benefit, including health and wellbeing.
