Stunting affects about one third of children under five in developing countries and is a measure of chronic undernutrition. This project will identify pre and postnatal risk factors for impaired child growth and development by monitoring a cohort of infants in Vietnam to three years of age, and developing a predictive algorithm for early detection of those at risk of stunting. Effective preventative measures would improve child health, and prevent a huge burden of disease.

This project will use novel, large-scale population data to identify and quantify the impact of risks to early life mortality and preventable pathways. This project explores their early roots, before overt disease emerges, in 3500 parents and their children in the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. We will measure how accumulated stress and buffering characteristics play out in the biology of cell ageing and inflammation, in developing heart, lung, kidney and bone health, and in quality of life and health costs to the population.

Food allergy (FA) has risen to epidemic proportions in recent times and Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. FA is most common in children under 5 years, yet adolescents are at the greatest risk of death from food-related anaphylaxis. We don’t know why this is the case. Our research will describe FA prevalence and will assess the factors placing FA adolescents at high risk of severe allergic reactions. Findings will influence policy for management of FA and anaphylaxis.

Chest infections are one of the major reasons children are admitted to hospital, particularly in Aboriginal children. This project will determine whether current vaccines have reduced hospital visits and how many children are affected by multiple infections. It will also identify where better vaccination programs are needed. This will be done by bringing together and analysing a range of infection and hospital records to paint a true picture of the impact of chest infections in children.
