Understanding Japan's human-centred environmentalism. Japanese environmental activism has influenced attitudes and policymaking on the environment in Japan and worldwide for half a century. This project will demonstrate the strengths and limitations of Japan’s human-centred environmentalism and will encourage us to reconsider the tension between human satisfaction and environmental protection.

This project will examine the explosive growth of interest in, and efforts to protect, historic sites in Australia between the mid-1960s and 2010. During this period, the number of recognised historic sites and buildings in Australia grew from less than 200 to almost 35 000. The repatriation of ancestral remains is an extraordinary Indigenous achievement and inter-cultural development of the past 40 years.
