Increasingly, large Australian multicentre research programs in biological and medical sciences have a genomics component that involves integration of biological information with sequencing data. The success of these research programs depends on rapid internet access to the research information by all participating scientists. The universal design of the proposed information management system means that it can be easily adapted to support a broad range of research programs. The development of this software program therefore has the potential to benefit research scientists, academics and students in many related fields, as well as the broader community, through enhancing research outcomes.Read moreRead less

Distributed memory cluster:
This project aims to establish a new supercomputing facility. The NSW research community has used high performance computing (HPC) to achieve major breakthroughs across a diverse range of disciplines including astrophysics, bioinformatics, environmental science, information technology and engineering. As the use of HPC increases, the application-specific needs of the research community become more diverse, requiring greater flexibility as well as higher performance. The present facility is no longer internationally competitive, and is hampering progress in cutting edge research. The new cluster is designed to provide a greater than 10-fold increase in computing capability.Read moreRead less

Environmental disturbances shape the dynamics of the world's ecosystems. However, we do not understand how they influence biodiversity at its most fundamental level, genetic diversity. This is important, because genetic diversity affects the fitness of individuals, the viability of populations and the adaptability of species. This project will study fire in the Australian environment to discover how disturbance affects genetic diversity. By integrating landscape genomics and computational modelling with long-term field studies, the research will significantly advance our understanding of how genetic diversity is distributed, and improve our ability to predict the responses of natural populations to changes in the frequency and severity of wildfire.Read moreRead less
How novel ribosomal RNA gene repeat variants drive cellular function. The hundreds of ribosomal RNA gene repeat copies are a remarkable part of our genomes, as they encode the machinery responsible for all cellular protein synthesis and shape the structure of the nucleus. However, due to their high degree of sequence similarity, they still have not been assembled into the human genome reference. This project will resolve this impasse and furthermore uncover the functional impacts of a newly iden ....How novel ribosomal RNA gene repeat variants drive cellular function. However, due to their high degree of sequence similarity, they still have not been assembled into the human genome reference. This project will resolve this impasse and furthermore uncover the functional impacts of a newly identified molecular diversity in the ribosomal RNA gene repeats. Outcomes include new paradigms for how the ribosomal RNA gene repeats drive protein synthesis and genome structure, and a blueprint to develop novel genomics applications for human health, biotechnology, and agriculture.Read moreRead less

Adaptation to environmental change is required for species to persist, however rapid environmental change may exceed the limits of traditional genetic adaptation leading to widespread decline. Recent work has highlighted the 'extended genotype' as an additional factor influencing adaptive phenotypes. This project aims to examine DNA methylation and polyploidisation as both a cause and consequence of the adaptation process using natural populations of the model cereal Brachypodium distachyon. The project aims to determine the architecture of these features and how their variability impacts adaptive traits such as flowering time. From the functional role of the extended genotype the project endeavours to predict and select genetic responses to the environment.Read moreRead less

Landscape genomics to make an endangered community resilient. This project aims to use landscape genomic techniques to assess how key species of the critically endangered Box-Gum Grassy Woodland community migrate and adapt under changing environmental conditions. This project aims to use landscape genomic techniques to assess how key species of the critically endangered Box-Gum Grassy Woodland community migrate and adapt under changing environmental conditions. Changing climate and land use threaten ecological communities, and alter environments at alarming rates. When species are pushed beyond their environmental tolerances, they will migrate, adapt or face local extinction. This alteration of the community structure affects the stability and function of the ecosystem. Expected outcomes include efficient use of limited conservation resources, ensuring the long term persistence of the endangered community.Read moreRead less
Genomics for persistence of Australian freshwater fish. Biodiversity faces an unpredictable cocktail of impacts and global environmental change, against which the best insurance is genetic diversity. We will develop genomic measures of ecological-genetic functions and evolutionary potential for managing Australian freshwater fish.

Understanding how species are formed is of broad significance. National benefit will come from internationally competitive research and collaborations with leading international researchers. Benefits will also come under the ARC Priority Goals of 'An Environmentally Sustainable Australia' as I will (i) provide genetic data that will be invaluable for the conservation of a highly threatened species, (ii) determine the importance of contact zones for generating new species and maintaining the evolutionary potential of regions, and (iii) address the role of climate change in shaping diversity over recent evolutionary time, an understanding of which is essential for predicting the impact of future change. Metapopulation and habitat quality: towards an integrated approach to the conservation of an endangered grassland lizard. Our research will provide the basis upon which the grassland earless dragon can be removed from its endangered status and provide a template for the future science based management of other endangered species. Australia will gain through this project by reducing its risk of losing yet another species through inappropriate management.
