Summary
Heart disease affects 1 in every 100 babies, making it one of the most common illnesses in infancy. Diagnosis and treatment of childhood heart disease often causes significant stress and trauma for children and their families. If support is not provided early, children can experience ongoing physical, emotional, and developmental problems. Improving Research Evidence Quality Using Individual Patient Data, Prospective Meta-analysis And Trial Registration
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$387,489.00
Summary
The quality of evidence we use to make health care decisions can be improved if we use systematic reviews that are planned ahead, that use raw data from each participant and include all the trials that have looked at the clinical problem. This research program will utilise these three ways of obtaining better quality data and will thus make research results more reliable. In particular, we will use these techniques to address health problems in mothers and babies.
Towards Precision Medicine For Non-small Cell Lung Cancer
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$463,652.00
Summary
Better outcomes are needed for lung cancer, a disease that accounts for more cancer-related deaths than any other cancer in Australia or worldwide. My goals are to 1) develop and evaluate in clinical trials targeted therapies and immunotherapies and 2) identify clinically relevant blood and tissue based biomarkers for lung cancer patients. This combination of clinical and translational research will change practice and improve outcomes by delivering precision medicine for lung cancer patients.
Dysfunction In Anterior Cingulate Brain Networks: Implementations For Psychiatric And Substance Use Disorders
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$380,558.00
Summary
Psychiatric and substance use disorders are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent evidence points to discrete brain networks as being critically involved in the neurobiology of these disorders. Using novel brain imaging techniques, this research will increase our knowledge of how these brain networks are involved in these disorders. This will represent an important step towards elucidating their biological underpinnings and improving outcomes for affected patients.
Immunisation Practice And Policy Development In Australia: Responding To Urgent Priorities In Prevention Of Endemic And Epidemic Infectious Diseases In Children.

Funding Amount
$401,361.00
Summary
Despite high immunisation coverage rates in Australia deaths still occur in young infants from vaccine preventable diseases such as whooping cough, meningitis and influenza. My research in vaccines and immunisation involves trialing new vaccines such as meningococcal B and H1N1 vaccine to ensure their safety and effectiveness in children and investigation of new ways to deliver vaccines to improve uptake of new vaccines in the community to ensure earlier and better protection for infants and chi ....Despite high immunisation coverage rates in Australia deaths still occur in young infants from vaccine preventable diseases such as whooping cough, meningitis and influenza. Regenerative Neuroscience Strategies For Healthy Brain Ageing And Dementia
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$463,652.00
Summary
Promotion of healthy brain ageing and prevention of dementia are amongst Australia's greatest medical challenges and of utmost concern to the public. This Fellowship will support a multidisciplinary approach to these challenges based around regenerative neuroscience. Valenzuela's group is a world leader in the science and practice of brain plasticity, and will lead twelve interlinked studies aimed at developing better ways to prevent dementia.
Psychosocial Implications Of Genetic Counselling And Testing
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$443,946.00
Summary
I am a psychologist by background, and my research program focuses on the psychological impact of genetic counselling and testing for adult-onset disorders, in particular cancer susceptibility; psychological adjustment of those at risk for adult-onset disorders; and the design and evaluation of interventions in the genetic counselling setting, in particular the use of decision aids as an innovative means of patient education.
Central Blood Pressure: Physiology And Clinical Application
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$459,270.00
Summary
Current methods used by doctors to measure blood pressure (BP) have many limitations that could result in incorrect diagnosis and inappropriate treatment of high BP (hypertension). This research program will determine the clinical usefulness of new methods to diagnose and treat people with high BP. The underlying mechanisms contributing to high BP will also be examined. The findings will lead to improved ways to identify and more effectively manage people with high BP.
