Dynamics of word recognition: new insight from the reach-to-touch paradigm. This project will introduce a new behavioural reach-to-touch paradigm for studying basic cognitive processes such as word recognition. The advantage of this paradigm is that it is able to measure cognitive processes moment-by-moment as they unfold over time. This will provide new insights into the temporal dynamics of basic cognitive processing.
Poor social functioning in schizophrenia: understanding its causes and developing better treatments. This project will advance knowledge of the thinking processes and the associated neural changes that cause the lifelong social disability which characterises schizophrenia. Findings will, in turn, contribute to better identifying young people, at risk of developing schizophrenia, and inform the design of new interventions and treatments.
Adapting cognition to a changing climate. Research indicates that public knowledge of the causes and consequences of global warming are poor, and a correct understanding is a key predictor of behaviour that reduces carbon footprints. This project applies basic principles of cognitive science to improve public knowledge and thereby increase the likelihood of reducing carbon footprints.
Mechanisms of learning at the interface between perception and action. Using the latest in brain imaging and simulator technology, this project will advance understanding of how experience shapes the visual centres of our brain. It will also support partnerships with construction, mining and health services by developing real and virtual machine interfaces and tools to enhance the outcome of simulator-based training.
A new complex systems approach to road trauma: Applying systems thinking to the fatal five. By 2030 road trauma is expected to be the fifth leading cause of global deaths. The current road user centric road safety approach has failed to control the global health epidemic of road trauma. Although systems thinking is widely accepted to be the most effective approach for understanding and enhancing safety in complex systems, it has not yet been adopted in road safety efforts. This project aims to a ....A new complex systems approach to road trauma: Applying systems thinking to the fatal five. This project aims to apply a novel, integrated framework of systems analysis and design methods to the so called 'fatal five' causes of road trauma to create new knowledge on their causes and to develop and test new interventions that will enable the achievement of currently unreachable road safety targets.Read moreRead less
Combating Misinformation – Designing a Toolkit to Address a Global Problem. Misinformation impairs people’s cognition – their memory, reasoning and judgements – even if credible corrections are issued; it therefore poses a significant threat to evidence-based practice and policy. This project aims to develop novel psychological interventions to reduce the impact of misinformation, based on an experimental research program designed to systematically assess the effects of various types of misinfor ....Combating Misinformation – Designing a Toolkit to Address a Global Problem. Misinformation impairs people’s cognition – their memory, reasoning and judgements – even if credible corrections are issued; it therefore poses a significant threat to evidence-based practice and policy. This project aims to develop novel psychological interventions to reduce the impact of misinformation, based on an experimental research program designed to systematically assess the effects of various types of misinformation on cognition and behaviour. The expected outcome is the development of new knowledge regarding misinformation processing and communication and its translation into a toolkit for practical application. This promises to improve individual and public decision making and foster a culture of accurate information exchange.Read moreRead less
Deliberative democracy and climate change: building the foundations of an adaptive system. This project will find mechanisms for improving public debate regarding climate change and the ability to respond to the challenge, as well as the politics surrounding it. It will make recommendations about the approaches needed to transform the issue and at the same time achieve better democratic outcomes.
The origin of cumulative culture in human evolution. Humans accumulate knowledge and use cumulative culture to transfer it across generations, and identifying the origin of this unique ability is a significant research priority for the study of archaeology and human evolution. This project aims to discover the emergence of cumulative culture by using experiments to evaluate stone tool-making, a technology passed between humans for 3.3 million years. Expected outcomes include international collaborations that improve our evolutionary understanding of teaching and learning, and produce new data on early stone artefacts in Indonesia and Australia. This should provide significant benefits for collaborative research and scholarly insight into human evolution and Indigenous knowledge in our region.Read moreRead less
Strengthening accountability for grand corruption crimes. This project will analyse and explain the development of an international responsibility to hold corrupt heads of state accountable by targeting their illicit wealth. The new knowledge generated will help academics understand this new norm and the resulting legal regime, and help policy-makers to better hold corrupt leaders accountable.
Prevention of age-related learning and memory dysfunction with novel compounds. This project will illuminate the fundamental brain changes that lead to age-related cognitive decline and to then test the validity of this as a novel therapeutic target. The expected outcome of this work will be a unique approach to the treatment of cognitive decline that will fill a significant unmet need within the community.
