Summary
The Aboriginal Birth Cohort study has been following the health of Aboriginal babies in the Northern Territory for the last 30 years. The participants were healthy till adolescence, but overweight and risk factors of diseases such as diabetes, kidney and heart disease are emerging. This follow-up will show when and whether these risk factors develop into disease, which factors are protective and which identify early those most at risk of developing diseases that cause the gap in life expectancy.

This project will characterise Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) in early adulthood. It will assess the prevalence of OSA in a well characterised cohort (the Raine Cohort), representative of the population of young adults in Western Australia. Overseas studies indicate that vitamin D might protect against certain cancers and other diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Vitamin D is made when skin is exposed to sunlight. Because sunlight is stronger in Australia than in most of the USA and Europe, where most studies were conducted, the results of those studies might not be relevant to Australia. In this study, we will see if vitamin D is important for cancer and mortality in Australia.

Thailand's disease patterns are changing. Some changes are good but others, like emerging diabetes, heart disease and injuries, are of concern. Development-related 'health transition' can be optimised if there is information on new causes of disease - immediate risk factors, and 'upstream' economic, cultural and environmental influences. The team will study this health-risk transition in the whole Thai population - looking back 50 years, then forwards in 100,000 Sukothai Thammathirat Open Univer ....Thailand's disease patterns are changing. Summary
Understanding the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the best ways of improving our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of disease development. There is evidence that genetic factors account for up to 80% of the risk for AD. Recent advances in genetics still explain <50% of this risk. This proposal will help two major Australian studies to partner with a large European consortium in trying to understand the “missing” heritability, using existing and novel genetic data.
