Defining An Effective Cardiovascular Risk Stratification System For Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$295,450.00
Summary
This project combines information from four large studies that have been carried out in Australia, the United States, and Finland that have collected measures on the same participants during childhood and again during adulthood, to determine an effective means of identifying children at risk of developing premature cardiovascular disease.
The Role Of Emerging Gastrointestinal Viruses In The First Two Years Of Life: A Birth Cohort Study
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$392,534.00
Summary
Gastro illnesses are common and potentially serious early in life. We are aiming to find out more about these illnesses by following ~140 children from birth to their second birthday, with parents collecting a dirty nappy swab every week. Our laboratory will test these samples for a wide range of known and new gastro viruses, and we will also be looking for, as yet, undiscovered viruses. This information will allow us to document the burden of these illnesses in young children and their families ....Gastro illnesses are common and potentially serious early in life. Using Lessons From The United Kingdom To Improve The Reproductive Health Of Aboriginal Adolescent Women
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$419,768.00
Summary
I will examine if parity and pre and post natal exercise can prevent urinary incontinence among older women in a large cohort study in the United Kingdom and use these skills to examine the contraceptive use of Aboriginal adolescent females and influence pre and post natal programs in four Aboriginal communities. The more knowledge and support Aboriginal adolescent females have the higher chances of them making informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Suicide And Self-harm In Young People In Australia
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$314,644.00
Summary
Suicide and self-harm are major public health problems in Australia and globally, placing a strain on health services. Rates are higher in vulnerable populations, such as those with a criminal history. Despite this, little is known about the long-term health outcomes of people who self-harm. I will analyse data from several large existing studies of the general population, and of ex-prisoners, to identify factors related to suicide and self-harm which may be changed in future research studies.
Estimating And Alleviating The Impacts Of Age-Related Sensory Decline
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$323,767.00
Summary
Sensory loss and dementia disproportionately affect older adults, often co-occur, and are the two leading contributors to disability burden among older Australians. This research will investigate the consequences that hearing and vision loss have for older adult health and wellbeing, informing strategies to reduce the disability burden of age-related sensory loss. These impacts include cognitive decline and dementia, mental health, quality of life, disability and independent living.
The Longitudinal Study Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Peoples Wellbeing (Mayi Kuwayu)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$320,891.00
Summary
The focus of Mayi Kuwayu will be to examine how improvements in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing are linked to things like connection to country, cultural practices, ritual, spirituality and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language use. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been saying for a long time that culture affects overall wellbeing.
Understanding Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) As A Pathway To Cardio-metabolic Disease
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$314,644.00
Summary
Urinary disorders (such as incontinence, frequently voiding, weak stream, urgency and others) share many risk factors with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and may appear before CVD and T2DM manifest. This proposal will examine which particular urinary symptoms, combined with specific risk factors (e.g. obesity, depression, erectile dysfunction) best predict the occurrence of these high-burden conditions using community-based cohorts of men and women.
Genetic And Environmental Risk Factors For Food Allergy In Australian Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$299,564.00
Summary
This project aims to provide important information on the role that genetic and environmental factors have in the development of food allergy in Australian children. The study will enable us to understand better the natural history of food allergy in infancy and early childhood and will help to identify risk factors for the development and resolution of food allergy. The results of this study will have implications for clinical guidelines and public health policy.
Exploring The Potential For Built Environment Intervention To Improve Adult And Child Physical Activity And Health
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$309,428.00
Summary
Health-promoting behaviours - such as physical activity - that are maintained from childhood to adulthood have a positive effect on health status. My research will examine aspects of the built environment associated with child behaviour, health and development and use these findings to formulate recommendations to key stakeholders for the design of user-friendly, active-living environments for children and interventions targeting adults.
