Recent events in global financial markets have had a major effect on the retirement plans of Australians and the living standards of retirees. This research will permit pension fund managers to better gauge the fundamental links that exist across international property markets, as well as provide a better understanding for both academics and practitioners on the driving forces that link international real estate markets together. The research will benefit all Australians as the outcomes will result in improved risk and return performance for superannuation funds, leading to a better standard of living for all retirees.Read moreRead less
Exploring Wellbeing Outcomes in the Aquatic and Recreation Industry. This project aims to investigate the impact on individual wellbeing through use of public aquatic and recreation centres in Australia. Through the use of mixed methods across multiple locations, the project expects to generate new knowledge on the effect on users of different management and service models for the provision of aquatic and recreational infrastructure. Expected outcomes include a quantifiable measure of social and ....Exploring Wellbeing Outcomes in the Aquatic and Recreation Industry. This project aims to investigate the impact on individual wellbeing through use of public aquatic and recreation centres in Australia. Through the use of mixed methods across multiple locations, the project expects to generate new knowledge on the effect on users of different management and service models for the provision of aquatic and recreational infrastructure. Expected outcomes include a quantifiable measure of social and emotional wellbeing that can be utilised by centre management and government. This will help assessment of best practice for maximising community wellbeing, and can guide investment decisions by state and local government.Read moreRead less

Sentient buildings. This project aims to unite outputs from the large and varied array of sensors deployed in buildings into a coherent whole. By coordinating detections of resources and personnel from multiple sensors, it intends to enable more efficient allocation of shared resources within a public site such as a hospital, and enable a more effective emergency response. It intends to also allow the building to adapt over time to the way it is used, or to changing conditions. This is expected ....Sentient buildings. It intends to also allow the building to adapt over time to the way it is used, or to changing conditions. This is expected to benefit the Australian construction industry as well as building operators, giving them a valuable export commodity. It intends also to benefit inhabitants of the buildings by providing a more safe, secure and accommodating environment.Read moreRead less
Mapping the movies: the changing nature of Australia's cinema circuits and their audiences 1956-1984. Support for film production is a high profile component in Australian cultural policy, but the cultural and commercial opportunity represented by cinema exhibition and attendance is less well understood. Support for film production is a high profile component in Australian cultural policy, but the cultural and commercial opportunity represented by cinema exhibition and attendance is less well understood. Focusing on the three decades after the introduction of television in 1956, this project is the first of its kind to use geospatial visualisation to map the social and economic circuits of cinema-going, and to identify the variables that explain cinema diversification, survival or closure. It will contribute to policy analysis in terms of local media access modelling, and will consolidate this team's international reputation for innovative Australian research in the representation of historical data.Read moreRead less
Regional Markets and Local Audiences: Case Studies in Australian Cinema Consumption, 1928-1980. The argument that Australian cinema maintains Australian identity is mirrored by the perception that imported cinema threatens national cultural integrity. We examine the historical basis for this discourse in order to propose alternative conceptual frameworks which view cultural exchange in less alarmist terms. The argument that Australian cinema maintains Australian identity is mirrored by the perception that imported cinema threatens national cultural integrity. We examine the historical basis for this discourse in order to propose alternative conceptual frameworks which view cultural exchange in less alarmist terms. In analysing the role of cinema in the creation of community identity, our research positions the social experience of Australian cinema-going as central to emerging international research, and provides a basis from which policy researchers can sustain a more complex account of national cultural maintenance, given the demographic circumstances which unavoidably position Australia as a net importer of cinema product.Read moreRead less
Promoting Healthy Eating Habits: an investigation of the link between healthy eating and school canteens. The incidence of childhood obesity is of growing national concern. This is evidenced by the considerable media attention given to the problem and its place as a national research priority. While there has been a focus on the link between childhood obesity and physical activity, less research has been undertaken into the link between obesity and nutrition. While there has been a focus on the link between childhood obesity and physical activity, less research has been undertaken into the link between obesity and nutrition. This research project aims to investigate the link between healthy eating and the design and management of school canteens with the view to developing design and management guidelines that will influence the life-long eating habits of Australian children.Read moreRead less
Legal risk management of adverse health outcomes and injury in the fitness industry: developing evidence-informed regulation that improves safety. This project analyses Australian laws, policies and practices designed to manage legal risks and liabilities in the fitness industry, and assesses their effectiveness in preventing adverse health outcomes, injuries, and the legal liability associated with those risks.

To reduce the environmental impact of houses, state governments have mandated performance requirements on the energy efficiency of buildings. This research will develop advanced design techniques for the application of insulation in buildings, improving their performance. This will increase the effficiency of new buildings reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the peak power demand from residential buildings will reduce, decreasing the need to upgrade our electrical infrastructure. The research will enable more cost effective insulation solutions to be developed in the building industry and increase employment in the insulation industry.Read moreRead less

The project will minimise the impact of the Greenhouse Pollution Reduction Scheme and anticipated rises in water costs on the householders. It will assist the consumers and the building industry in evaluating the environmental and economic costs and benefits of specific retrofitting actions for building envelope and major fixed appliances (thermal insulation, glazing, air infiltration, hot water, heating/cooling, lighting, low water flow and water reuse appliances, and solar photovoltaic systems). In addition to assisting a burgeoning renovation industry, the project will enable accurate assessment of the impacts of the Green Loans Program and guide future national and local energy and water reduction policies.
