Photonic packaging plays key roles in development of new optical technology. The project aims to establish the theories and techniques for characterising the integrity of soldered and adhesively bonded assemblies for photonic packaging. The critical failure mechanisms will be investigated, and sophisticated life prediction models will be established using artificial neural network (ANN) approaches for reliability assessment. The outcomes of the project will fill the gap in the knowledge for characterising failure processes of these assemblies and provide effective methods and easy-to-use guidelines
for reliability evaluation and life prediction of photonic packages, expanding and enhancing Australia's capacity in the areas.

Effective clinical handover communication: improving patient safety, experiences and outcomes. Communication in clinical handover (transfer of responsibility for patient care) plays a causal role in many adverse events. This project will contribute new knowledge for improvements in handover communication which will be shared across hospitals and health departments nationally to improve patient safety and reduce healthcare costs.

FlashLite: a high performance machine for data intensive science: The 21st century has been described as the century of data. Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data. This project will build a platform focussed on data intensive science.Read moreRead less

Raising people's awareness of healthy and ecological food options with nutritional data and educational information does not foster a sustained practice towards a more environmentally friendly food culture. This study seeks to develop a better understanding how to go beyond just informing and into supporting and sustaining action and change. Drawing on interaction design, ubiquitous computing and real- time information, the study will deliver research findings that inform viable new design approaches and information interfaces which will strengthen Australia's position to resolve the problems of obesity, malnutrition and ecological issues of mass food processing, and contribute to the sustainability of life in Australian cities.Read moreRead less
Engaging with Social Media in Museums. It implements National Research Priority Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries: promoting an innovation culture and economy and smart information use.
The Australian museum sector is undergoing a period of substantial change in response to policy and technology initiatives, yet little formal collaboration exists between museums and researchers. This project brings some of the country's major museums together with the Smithsonian Institution, one of the world's foremost cultural institutions.Read moreRead less

A key principle of corporate social responsibility is that companies should endeavour to engage with, and be responsive to, the concerns of affected local communities. With the support of four industry partners, this study will compare how community engagement has been practised at seven Australian minerals operations. The study will assess the effectiveness and appropriateness of existing engagement processes, account for significant differences between sites, and identify opportunities for improving how companies engage with communities. Social Identity Theory will be utilised to structure the research and inform the development of advice to industry on effective engagement strategies.Read moreRead less

Artificial intelligence (AI), as it continues to grow and evolve, is taking an increasingly leading role in strategic plans of the world’s leading economies, IT companies, and universities, with the promise to be a key driver in innovation, science, education, and society. This project will establish a whopping Volta graphical processing unit Cluster (wVGC) with the aim of smashing current impediments to compute-intensive AI research. The wVGC features a contemporary HPC system equipped with 120 most advanced NVIDIA Volta GPUs distributed in 30 high capable nodes. The wVGC will transform AI research in Australia, putting us on the same footing as leading research groups around the globe, and at the forefront of the world’s AI revolution.Read moreRead less
Frontiers of Australian science popularisation. This project details Australia's role in science popularisation in the 1960s and 1970s, when the boundary between science fiction and science fact was often blurred. The project will explore how popular science of that era framed today's crucial issues of climate change, overpopulation and space exploration.
Social media in times of crisis: learning from recent natural disasters to improve future strategies. This project will analyse and evaluate how social media was used by emergency authorities, media organisations and citizens during recent natural disasters, including the January 2011 Queensland floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi. The project will develop a framework for longer-term strategies for public communication during emergencies.

Large numbers of initiatives now mobilise technology to support the wellbeing of young Australians. However, amongst communities undertaking this work, there is currently significant duplication and insufficient sharing of research and best practice models. A Research Facility that consolidates existing research, and guides new research and initiatives will improve service delivery to young Australians by: reducing duplication between organizations working with young people; providing an accessible interface with research that can help address the community’s concerns about the role of technology in young people’s lives, and inform future policy and programs; and model effective cross-sector knowledge brokering to Australian industry.
